The 'Millions Room' or 'Vicatin Cabinet'...

<font face=garamond size=3>The list of people who lived here is a virtual "Who's Who" in European history. The powerful Maria Theresa, who in the mid-18th century made Schönbrunn the summer residence of the Imperial family, did much to enlarge and expand upon the original structure. The ochre color is known as "Maria Theresa Yellow," for it was she who had Schönbrunn painted this color. Her daughter, the famous Marie Antoinette, spent her childhood here.

Mozart performed for the Empress Maria Theresa at Schönbrunn when he was a mere six years old. And Napoleon set up his headquarters here in 1805 and again in 1809. After the fall of the French Empire, Napoleon's small son lived here in exile. Charles I, the last of the ruling Habsburgs, abdicated from here in 1918.

Franz Joseph and his wife Elisabeth, who occupied Schönbrunn in the mid-19th century, did a great deal of restructuring during their reign to make it a year round residence for the imperial family. Perhaps it is difficult to relax in such opulence and formality. Perhaps it is the nature of monarchs that they take their duties so seriously that they seem to take little pleasure in their lives.

Whatever the reasons, life was not relaxing or terribly enjoyable for Franz Joseph and Elisabeth. Franz Joseph was a rigid, strict autocrat. He arose every morning without variation at 4 a.m., bathing in cold water. He was a very strict Catholic, and after his cold bath, he knelt down to say his morning prayers. At 5 a.m. he was in his study doing work. He is known to have often said, "One must work until one drops from exhaustion." The simple iron bed that he slept in testifies to the fact that he was as frugal as he was severe.
