Getting around Bern

The tram and bus system is the best way to sightsee.

The Blue Train

Single journeys for 1 - 6 stops cost CHF 1.70 (valid in one direction for 45 minutes).
Tickets for 7 stops and more cost CHF 2.60 and are valid for 1.5 hours. Tickets can be obtained from the ticket automats (at tram/bus stops).

Bus line Nr 15

This bus line begins in the eastern suburb of Bern, Ostermundigen
and end in the western suburb of Bern, Köniz.
It is the longest bus line through Bern

Tram 9

coming from Guisanplatz going to Wabern
just at the end of the Kornhausbrücke.
In the background : the Kursaal

Wabern to Guisanplatz (BEA exhibition)

takes you from Wabern
to the trainstation (Bahnhof)
to the Baerenplatz
to the famous Zytglogge
and ends at Guisanplatz
The house in the background is the Kornhaus
with the famous Kornhauskeller (restaurant)
which is certainly worth a visit as it is very old with its own architectural highlights.

Trams are used as an advertising means

another Tram Nr 9 with the advertisement from a bank. This is why the trams are so colurful and come in different designs.

Tram Nr 5

this tram comes from Ostring and goes over the transtation
to Fischermätteli
In the House on the right is the famous restaurant "Du Theatre"
familiarly named "Dudu"

Kornhausbrücke

The bridge crosses Bern's river Aare.
The big house in the back ist the BKW-house,
Bernische Kraft-Werke, the electricity company.

In the foreground : bicycle-parking
Downtown of Bern are a lot of streets which are car free only pedestrian zones.
so it is fun to ride a bicycle through this area. There are 3 or 4 places
where you pay only a deposit , no leasing fees and you can ride to your hearts content.
Ask in your hotel. or at the information at the train station

Dalmazibahn

That is the shortest train line of Bern !
going from the Bundeshaus Terrasse to Marzili

Dalmazi Bahn really worth a ride

Just 106 meter long
constructed in 1885

Before renovation, this train used water power to go up and down.
At the top station water was filled in a tank.under the cabin and this weight pulled the cabin downwards and at the same time pulled the other cabin upwards.

At the bottom station the water was emptied and so with this simple law of gravity it was operated for years.

Today it works with electricity.

Automats

You push the appropriate button (kurz/short or lang/long), the amount (1.60 or 2.60) appears in a window, you put coins in the slot, and get your ticket and any change out below.

Make used of the multiple journey card

An alternative is a ticket ("Mehrfahrtenkarte") good for 12 trips.
These are available for short (Fr. 16.00 or for long trips Fr. 25.00 from the BareAbi-Shop at Bubenbergplatz 5, which is next door to the Manora cafeteria (near the UBS, across from the train station) or at some ticket automats.

Please note that the ticket has to be stamped in the automat before each trip.

Fr. 10.50 for 48 hours
Fr. 14.50 for 72 hours.

Daily ticket

Another option, a daily ticket for unlimited trips for Fr. 8.00, is available from the BareAbi-Shop and some ticket automats.

Weekly pass

Weekly passes are also available at Fr. 32,00 but are not worthwhile unless you plan to use the bus a lot.

Should you decide to get a weekly pass, you will need a photo (available from photo automats in the train station) and some form of identification (e.g. passport).

Monthly pass

Monthly passes are available for Fr. 64. Weekly and monthly passes are less expensive for "seniors" (women over 62 and men over 65) and for children under 16.
