Jesse's world

by arcticboy - last update: Mar 25, 2005

My Homeland

Inukshuk
Well as most of you have likely gathered, I'm from the arctic. This is just a picture of an inukshuk in Nunavut Territory, I grew up in the arctic, there are many scenes like this up here.

Although I grew up in a modern world, life is still punctuated by the past. Fathers today still bring their sons out on the tundra and sea ice to hunt as they were taught by thier fathers to preserve our history and culture.

Work, a brief history

Now that I'm "not a kid anymore" I've got a semi-permant job. Over the years I've worked in some pretty cool places in Nunavut and BC. My very first job was as a legislative page for the inaugaration and first sitting of the Legislative Assembly, April 1, 1999. I had front row seats for the birth of the largest aboriginal land claim in history. It really was something.

Not long after that I left my family and moved to the west coast of canada to Campbell River, BC. I was 15 at the time. I finished highschool there. I was really interested in the ocean during my stay in BC. I was active in sea cadets and did some training at sea and at port with them for a couple years. I also volunteered as a deck hand on a coast guard cutter for a while. I still love the sea and I hope to live part of my life on it.

After I graduated I drifted around for a while. I traveled throughout BC and to the States a bit. I came back to Nunavut after I was out of money and got odd jobs here and there every few months. I joined air cadets here in Iqaluit and I got to know the commanding officer of the sqadron and I ended up renting a room from him. While I was checking out his house for the first time, I met a manager from the Nunavut Research Institute. After chatting for a bit, I was offered a job for the summer. The NRI was my jumping point into the world of the working. I ended up working there 3 summers in a row. In fact it was at the NRI that I met Julie. after working for the NRI I moved to Montreal With Julie and hung around Montreal and traveled to Chile and Easter Island. When I came back I went on to work at the Baffin Regional Hospital as a "biomedical technician". Basically I helped a technologist fix and maintain medical equipment for the hospital and maintain a database. It was a pretty fun job, it kept me intellectually active. From there I went to my current job.

I currently work for the department in the Government of Nunavut (GN) responsible for Culture, Language, Elders and Youth. (CLEY) I was hired as a project officer to establish and implement something called the Historic Places Initiative (HPI) in Nunavut. HPI is a collaboration between Parks Canada and all the provincial and territorial governments in Canada. Our goal is to identify, promote and preserve places of historic importance. I have to admit that it's been quite the ride. I've gotten to travel to a few places in Nunavut and Canada. I've met quite a few interesting people. But it does keep me busy, so I'll keep trying to update my pages and put some more pictures and stuff up whenever I can.

Hi Jesse, I think it's great that you put up some details about your heritage, it's really interesting. How was China? I'm planning to go there myself inthe next year or two.
