Jong River

Birds on Branch
This was one of our very beautiful views of the river as we were traveling back up the river to Mattru on motorboat.

Hospital Lab

The Hospital in Bonthe is basically run by the government, though not entirely. I think this picture captures the essence of the room wonderfully. It's only a tiny little room with various medical testing supplies, but with a great 'tropical breeze" from the river. Bonthe is on an island....

Children Singing...

My team helped organize (with the help of many locals) a mini Vacation Bible School-like events for the kids of the Mattru/Goba Town area. We had HUGE attendance which was awesome! And then to hear them sing in Mende and so joyfully! Wow!!!!!! Praise the Lord!

Cutest kids in the world!

Before we left for Mattru, we visited Kissi Hospital, a hospital in Freetown. There are pretty big maternal and dental wards, though we didn't get to see much of it. But we did get to play with some of the local kids. One boy brought over his pet monkey even!

Ooooh....candy!

Okay, okay, so this sweet child probably doesn't know what candy is, but it still seems to be pretty interestingto her. She's holding a wrapped lifesaver in her hand, but it's like right in front of the white part of her shirt, so it's hard to see...

This is our "Kowabunga Dude" dude! He's a darling! He had an old 2nd-hand Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles sweatshirt, but never seemed to have pants on. Go figure. Still a cutie! We got the whole group of kids down at the refeeding ward to say "KOWABUNGA DUDE!" It was great! hehe :-)

Weighing time...

Once a week, really early in the morning, all the kids in the refeeding ward are weighed and measured. It is a ritual of sorts now for the little residents.
As you can see, some of the little ones weren't all that thrilled, though I can't say I blame them.

you remind me of my stay when the war between the RUF and the government was at the peak. I was there in 1999 and 2000. even babies were not spared being chopped off their limbs
