Create a Family Around the World....

by drolkar - last update: Jul 29, 2003

... by sponsoring a child or two or...

I cannot emphasize strongly enough just how rewarding (and fun!) an experience it has been for me to get to know these six wonderful people and their families. It is my hope to be able to meet them all one day... preferably more than once.

Sometimes I wonder -- if everyone with adequate financial means would sponsor even one child, how much of a dent could we make in the world's problems, material and otherwise ?!

Since 1994 I have been a "sponsor" through four different organizations, and I am happy to answer any questions you may have. Just drop me a line...
Geshe-La visits with Nankyi
Nankyi, originally from Tibet, now 20 years old and studying hotel management in Mangalore, India.

Excerpt from her latest letter:

"I finished my exam in the end of April and had two months vocational training. In May I did training at the Le Meridien Hotel in Delhi...There I used to mingle with guests who come from abroad. I am very close to some common inhouse guest...All of them are good to me and I enjoyed the training a lot. At the same time I learned many new things in the hotel...

...I feel very happy to keep touch with you. I hope our connection will never lose."
Bethy from Agua Zarca, Honduras, now almost 17 years old. She became my very first sponsored child back in 1994.

Bethy is the star of "A Portrait of Save the Children in Honduras," the short documentary that has just been completed (June 2003).
Bethelihem from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, now 14 years old.

Gianluca and I are sponsoring her together, and some Ethiopian friends of mine here in Boston have been helping us with the correspondence.

Excerpt from her latest letter:

"How are you? My family says hi... I will take the second semester exam on June 28. My first semester scores are fine. I am studying now, pray for me please...

I celebrated the Easter in the Church. I watched a movie of Jesus Christ. We had songs and dramas and then we had cookies and candies. I was so happy. It is hot here. How about in your country?"
Haoua from Niger... the newest addition to the family, now 12 years old.

Gianluca and I are sponsoring her together, as well.

The first letter from Haoua just arrived recently ! (However, it had apparently crossed in the mail with mine...)
Hasena from the village of Ashurail in Bangladesh, now 11 years old.

There are many more photos of Hasena on my Bangladesh page, since I have visited her twice, and her drawings are proudly displayed on my refrigerator at home. She clearly has a very good eye for colors and how to combine them - perhaps she will turn out to be an artist ?!

Excerpt from her latest letter:

"I often think of you. My term examinations are over. I shall sit for the scholarship examination next, so please pray for me so that I may do well.

Now it is summer in Bangladesh. The days are very hot. We get different kinds of seasonal fruits... It would be nice if you come to visit us during this time. That's all for today."
Souleymane from Kolondieba, Mali, now 10 years old.

Excerpt from his latest letter:

"We are doing well and we hope the same is true for you. We are happy for the books. I thank you for the picture taken with Hasena. I informed my parents that you would like to come and see me [here] in the village. I am the oldest child of my parents. I also have two younger sisters and two younger brothers... We are ready to welcome you into our family."
