Close to the Thuringian Forest, next to Autobahn 4 between Gotha and Erfurt, the so-called "Three Gleichens" are situated on three separate hills.
According to legend, lightning struck three fortresses at the same time on a stormy night in May 1231, causing huge fires that could be seen from far away. [German word gleich = like, or resembling]

Gleichenburg The Gleichen Fortress was erected in the 11th century by the Earl of Weimar-Orlamünde. |
Wachsenburg This fortress was built around 950 to protect the Arnstadt area. [btw, Arnstadt is a lovely town not far away and always worth a short visit] |
Mühlburg The Mühl Fortress was first mentioned in 704 and was erected by the Franconians to protect their newly occupied area (today central Thuringia). |
