The Mysteries of Rome

by unravelau - last update: Mar 13, 2003

Something special -- but un-named.

A beautiful scene.
On the way toward Michael Angelo's very special ramp up to Campidoglio and on the left hand side I photographed this unusual and beautiful scene. Do you know what it is?
Mystery No 2.

Mystery Number 2

It is probably part of the Forum. I took the photo standing with my back to the front door of the colosseum in Rome. If you walk up the left hand side of this picture you come to the Arc di Tito.
Mosaic from S Clemente.

A pastel copy of a postcard from S Clemente

St Clemente in Rome has a wide range of postcards of the mosaics to be found within the church. Anon.
The Back of ........................

This is the back of a well known church in Rome.

Yes, I do know about this one, do you?
Chiese S Marie Maggiore.

S Maria Maggiore in Rome

Yes, that's right. The back of this Basilica is shown in the previous photo................my little camera did want to get all of the church in, but I succeeded finally with my bigger camera in 2001..........I will find it soon I am sure.
A well known head.

Who is this?

He seems to be frightened that the picture above might fall on him. He may be found in the Capitoline Museum in Rome.
A peaceful pool in the park.

Now for the next mystery

Can be found at the back of the Terme Caracalla in Rome.............this is one end of the pool.
A pool of running water......but where to?

And the other end shows the outlet.

Now first off I thought maybe this is recycled back up to the other end but closer investigation made me realise that the water is coming from higher up (first photo). Now given that there is a set of stairs to take you down to street level (more or less Right below the bridge), and that the water sounds as if it drops a long way...............maybe this water is what I actually heard in the bowls of S Clemente the advance buildings of which can be seen in the top right hand section of this photo. That means that it was still running under the roadway, the advance buildings and indeed still going somewhere else past Clemente too. Anyway just a mystery and a solution maybe.

Enjoyed your take on Rome and off the cuff commentary. A week next year loks as though it should be stretched to a month if I'm to do and see all the things that interest me. leyle

I liked the colosseum aspects travellogue Carole. And as usual, I like the way you look at buildings, at the city, at history. I never visited Castel Sant'Angelo, may be I will have to do one day; it seems it is one of your favourites on this planet.
