Itaipu is one of the 7 modern wonders of the world and until the one in China is completed is the largest Dam in the world. It is amazing. To put the size of this dam into perspective here are some stats:
The rate of construction at Itaipu was equivalent to a 20 storey building every 55 minutes
The total volume of rock and earth excavated from the site is equivalent to more than twice of Sugarloaf mountain in Rio
The amount of steel used to contstruct Itaipu could be used to build 380 Eiffel Towers
The spillway at the dam can handle a flow of water 40 times greater than that at Igaucu Falls |
