We started at the VOC-cafe located in the Schreierstoren (Prins Hendrikkade 94). The tower can be seen right of the big church (St. Nikolaas Kerk). |
| | Schreierstoren The Schreierstoren was built around 1487. It got its name, because it was located at a sharp corner (scrayer) of the medieval city wall and not because the seaman wifes were weeping (= schreien) here, when the ships left. |
| | Nieuwmarkt From the Schreierstoren we walked along the Oosterdok waterfront, where we climb the NEMO educational musum to have a better viwe on the city. Via the Oude Schans and the Rechte Boomsloot we went to the Nieuwmarkt, where we stopped for some food we bought on the biological saturday market. |
| | Oudemanhuispoort Southwards we continued our trip and we made a short detour to allow cuckkoo and Skipper to check in into their Hotel at the Rusland and dropped off their luggage. A little more to the South we went into the Oudemanhuispoort, where secondhand books are sold. This used to be the entrance to the Old Men- and Women Hospital; from 1876 its the Head Office of the University of Amsterdam. |
| | Los Cafe Via the Staalstraat (sorry I have no chocolate pictures) we arrived at the Waterlooplein. Unfortunately the entrance to the NAP-basement was closed; that's for the next meeting.
Over the Blauwbrug with a nice view over the Amstel river we went to the Rembrandtsplein. Tired from all the walking and talking we stopped at Cafe Los (Rembrandtsplein 1) to have a drink and writes some postcards. |
| | Reguliersbreestraat We went West towards the Munttower via the Reguliersbreestraat. This street is known for the fast food shops, the Tuschinski Theater cinema and the sex shops.
We had no time to pose in front of the Munttower webcam; we just moved on via the Rokin in the direction of the Dam Square.
We made a quick visit to P.G.C. Hajenius, the famous cigar store (since 1826) at Rokin 92.
ATLC did some shoe window shopping and I had to buy fresh camera batteries. |
| | Dinner time At the Dam Square we enjoyed the performance of some street artists.
As most of us were tired we quickly went to La Colina at the Nieuwezijds Kolk 9 to have our dinner. |
| | Time to say goodbuy Around 8PM it was time to go home. Most of us went to the Central Station to catch a bus, train or metro. Goto Part 3 - Special projects |
