Borough Market and Environs

by M0B1US - last update: Feb 22, 2003

Under the railway arches by London Bridge...

A market for all things Epicurean
There has been a market at this site since the Roman times.
View of Southwark Cathedral past the Globe

...is a fantastic market from since yester year...

Again, Southwark Cathedral is another venerable structure. The Globe Tavern in the foreground featured in Bridget Jone's Diary when Hugh Grant and Colin Firth had their tussle, and it's not a bad place to wet your whistle either...

...with a range to choice to please all palates...

There are about a dozen meat stalls ranging from the usual fare to wild boar, panchetta, prosciutto, chorizo, ostrich and venison for example...
Organic Meat - Puts the supermarket stuff to shame
Hope I'm not offending any vegetarians...

...prepared in front of your very eyes...

A cut above the rest? Buying the good stuff is definitely worth it in comparison to what you're getting in the supermarkets - sure you get less meat for your money, so cut back and be healthy too...

...with the very freshest ingredients...

These guys sure don't loaf around, their breads are lovely, either on their own or as an accompaniment!

Don't worry - there are also plenty of traditional fruit and veg market stalls here as well!
Hand over the Dough!
Monmouths do a fine espresso - molto bene!

Are your feet sore? Take time to relax...

There are literally dozens of great cafes, bars and pubs around Borough Market catering to all budgets and tastes...

...and peruse the many shops here...

Neal's Yard Dairy has a fantastic range of the finest cheeses from Britain and Europe. Some of you may be familiar with the Neal's Yard shop in Covent Garden...
A very Cheesy establishment...
Vinopolis - a huge wine museum under the arches

...or check out the wine museum...?

Check this place out - the complete history of wine on a site where Roman Amphorae were excavated!

Pass through the history and wine regions of the world before reaching the tasting hall and the opportunity to buy your favourites!

I used to work near The Anchor pub Bankside. One day I was late for a meeting in the Shakespeare Room once and as i sat down at the table something tapped me sharply on the shoulder twice. Although no-one was near enough to me....

Helpful & interesting tips, I did not get all the way through them. I will be in London this January, looking forward to some of those pubs you mentioned. Kat
