Popular Music ~ Música Popular

by andal13 - last update: Oct 21, 2003

Jaime Roos
Uruguayan popular music has a lot of good artists; most popular expressions are urban and country music. Popular music oughts a lot to "revolutionary" musicians, like Eduardo Matteo with his fusion music, and Alfredo Zitarrosa with his milongas. (See "Must see activity"tips.)
Tango was and still is a popular style; its music and sexy dance have recently reborn.
Other popular expressions, like candombe and murga are commented on "Carnaval" chapter.
Uruguyan rock has some successful bands, like "Buitres", "La Vela Puerca", "No Te Va Gustar" and "Trosky Vengarán".
And recently, the "latin-pop" movement has grown, with groups like "Los Fatales" and "Bola 8".

"Buitres", "La Vela Puerca", "No Te Va Gustar" y "Trotsky Vengarán".

Carniva!!!!! ~ ¡¡¡¡Carnaval!!!!!

Uruguayan carnival is the longest in the world. Everywhere, carnival lasts three days, but here, lasts all February (and sometimes, a few days of March).
There are parades all over the country; the most famous parade is "llamadas", maximum expression of "candombe". Candombe is an afro-uruguyan rythmical music and dance; during colonial times, African slaves played their music and called their gods ("llamadas" means "calls").
Most popular llamadas take place in Durazno (in the middle of the country) and Montevideo; this one, is the most popular and magnificent
party.

Moreover, Uruguayan carnival is very teathrical; the groups ride from one "tablado" (popular and open theatre) to another during the night. There are different kinds of carnival groups; most oustanding are "murgas". Murga is a chorus that sings actuality and political songs ; most popular are "Falta y Resto", "Contrafarsa", "Araca la cana", "Diablos verdes", "La Reina de la Teja". All of them have recorded their music.
