Approach to "D" Launch During the height of the Cold War, the United States had strategic bombers and Nike ICBM's deployed to Thule Air Base. During the 1980's these were removed from the base and the missile silos and facilities were abandoned. |
The Silo's are now unmaintained and have suffered from many years of neglect. Doors to the underground bunkers are missing, the silo doors don't seal well and the many cycles of thawing on the surface has caused water to run into the silo's, which are below the permafrost. There are several feet of ice inside the missile silo's now. A testament to a bygone era of our capacity to keep an uneasy peace with another superpower. |
What a view! The view from up on D Launch is just spectacular! |

Papu34 Sun May 24, 2009 23:54 UTC What a treat! I was stationed at Thule in 1955-56 time frame. No running water, 3 min showers, marine toilets, etc Thanks for bringing this experience to others. | Elena77 Tue Mar 10, 2009 12:06 UTC Great tips on a fascinating place! If I ever make it to Greenland I will certainly take someone with me whom I can outrun! ; ) | moiraistyx Mon Oct 6, 2008 17:56 UTC Having my own personal stalker makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. My life would be so incomplete with out one. Would you like on also, I'm sure I could arrange for it. | Sininen Sat Aug 25, 2007 05:26 UTC I want to go there! Need I say more?
