Notice the iron wrought that Gaudi designed. You will see elaborate usage of iron wrought in just about all his buildings.
The two gates were the entrance and exit for horse pulled carriages |
| basement stable in Palau Guell |
| | Palau Guell This is actually the basement stable for the horses.
The design of the brick was to represent a forest.
Wait, I thought brick was brittle and couldn’t be used for support of such buildings? Very true, but in the bricklaying design that Gaudi used, he was able to pull this unheard of feat off with flying colors. Over 100 years later, and the brick are still holding up. Amazing! |
| | Palau Guell Extravagant waiting room
There are three main waiting rooms that invited guests would be asked to wait in. The three rooms have different ceiling designs, from the plain jane, to the profuse. The status of the guest, would determine which room they were asked to wait in.
Guell also had “spying” areas built around these rooms. He would walk/crawl around to see and hear what his guests were talking about before he would great them. He was a little bit of a voyeurist. (and judging from Gaudi’s designs, one might speculate he was a exhibitionist)
This would not be the room I would wait in. |
| | Palau Guell This the “main” room attached to the waiting room, where he could entertain or whatever the rich and famous did at the time. It reached the roof, and the ceiling skylights represented the moon and stars. We will see this from the top of the room in the next photo.
There are also pictures of Gaudi and Guell. These were done in more recent years, not while this was a residence. If you see the gaze of one to the other, that is not unintentional, even though Guell had something like 8 kids and a wife, there is serious “speculation” that they may have been a little bit more than just friends. |
| Moon and Stars, with Gaudi Chimney to right. |
| | Palau Guell I was unable to take any more photos inside. So I guess you will just have to take the tour yourself. But here is the “moon and stars” from the roof. |
| | Palau Guell Each room had a fireplace, and each of these are the chimneys. The are not just for function anymore. |
| | Palau Guell is it me, or would these be a pain in the arse to clean? |
