Sideling Hill Exhibit Center

View Eastward from the Exhibit Center
The engineers who planned I-68 decided to blast through Sideling Hill, a significant Ridge in the Alleghany Mountains. They chose to by-pass the narrow and winding ridge crossing of the old National Road, U.S. 40, which goes over the mountain several miles to the south. Where the interstate passes over (and through) Sideling Hill there is an interesting exhibit center which offers a fascinating insight into the geology of the region, and the methods of the formidable highway engineers.
Through the hillside

A Classic Syncline

Sideling Hill, and the other Alleghany Ridges, are what geologists call "synclines", massive spines of rock thrust upward into "folds" 350 million years ago. In pushing through the new roadbed for I-68, the engineers managed to remove 850 vertical feet of the mountain. In doing so, they were forced to excavate 10 million tons of rock!
"Folds" in the rock
Sideling Hill is about 6 miles west of the junction of I-68 and I-70. This is where Maryland starts getting hilly. Driving through the Maryland panhandle in winter can be a real challenge!

I was here over the weekend. My first time back in many years. They have done a nice job renovating the city. Not many tourists there but they are trying to attract them.

interesting Cumberland page. When I was there ('90) the only thing that seemed to be open was a pizza shop. Seems it must have changed. Also, the pedestrian walk way had piped in music, or muzak...don't remember. Thanks for the pages...
