"Cruise With M/S "Nordstjernen"" Longyearbyen Travelogue by wilda08

This is the ship that took us on a four days long cruise from Longyearbyen up to Moffen.
Unfortunally we weren't that lucky with the weather. Mostly gray and cloudy skies.
Our first stop, the first night, was in Barentsburg.
On the photo you see some of the local russians who played music, sang and danced for us.
It was fun.
After the show we went back to the boat, it was late so we went to bed.
When we woke up we were in the Magdalenafjord.
The Magdalenafjord is a really beautyfull place. We took the zodiacs and went for a walk. Because of the risk for polarbears we had to walk around in small groups with two guides for each group, one infront and one who walk behind us. Both of them carried rifles. We didn't meet any polarbears here.
After the Magdalenafjord we headed for the Monaccoglacier, where we were to have our dinner.
On the way there we passed a lot of small glaciers and huge mountains. The weather wasn't very good so all the clouds and the grey sky made the mountains look very dramatic.
This is what the Monaccoglacier looks like (part of it). It's three kilometers wide!
This is the place where they usally had seen polarbears, the guides told us. We were supposed to have our dinner here, but we were more interessted in looking for polarbears.
Zandra and one of the guides on the look out for polarbears at the Monaccoglacier.
Finally we saw our first polarbear!!!
All the italian-, dutch-, norwegian- and swedish tourists went completly wild!
It was really crowded and pretty difficult to take a good photo. The polarbear was pretty far away, and I only have a 300mm photo lence. But it's there, almost in the middle of the picture. Before leaving the Monaccoglacier we saw a total of four or five polarbears. It was great!
Now go to "Cruise With M/S 'Nordstjernen' part 2".
