Visiting the U.S. Palmer Station | Arrival at the U.S. Palmer Station |
Our ship was allowed to visit the U. S. Palmer Station at the Antarctica Peninsula. This facility is primarily involved in marine biology research due to the warmer climate and accessibility to the Antarctica Ocean. Krill which is a tiny ocean animal is the mainstay for all Antarctica wildlife from the fish to seals to whales so krill is a focus of marine biology research here. Palmer Station is smaller than the U.S. McMurdoo Station located at the center of the South Pole however the climate is certainly better at Palmer; the summer at Palmer hovers around 10-30 degrees and at MurMurdoo is is usually below freezing even in the summer months. |
| Hot Tub at Palmer Station |
| | The only Antarctica Station with a Hot Tub! This is the Palmer Station Hot Tub. According to the Lonely Planet Antarctica Guide, Palmer Station is the ONLY station on the continent with a hot tub. Apparently this was a research aquarium and it started leaking and was not repairable so they converted it to a hot tub - quite ingenious! |
| | Waste Management at Palmer Station This is the diesel fuel storage tank at Palmer Station. We were told all waste including recyclable material is compressed by a machine on the station and then sent by ship to Chile where it is either buried or recycled. Chile is the most environmentally conscious country in South America. |
