Hiking up Diamond Head Trail

by TropicGirl77 - last update: Apr 10, 2003

Beginning the Trail

Getting started . . .

This activity will require of you just a few things ... ONE, $, $2, or $5 to get you in the gate . . . TWO, water and good walking shoes (no slippers or fancy sandals) ... THREE, you will need energy to get up the 99 stairs . . . FOUR, a flashlight for just before and just after those 100 stairs . . . FIVE, a camera to take a shot of the breath taking view once you reach the top ! ! !

First, this is what to expect on the hike:

Take a deep breath: Go through the Kahala tunnel, pay the gate people the required fees, enter (park if you drove) take photo at sign, use restroom (buy water if you forgot to bring ... you will need this!!!) Follow the "beaten" pathway ... 74 steps, then dark tunnel, 99 steps, short tunnel then spiral stairway, enter into old fire control station, (crawl out and WATCH YOUR HEAD) stop for a view, then take the rest of the steps (very easy!) to the summit. Take a deep breath and go AWWWWW ! ! ! ... don't forget to take pictures and listen to what the park ranger has to say on some of the history.

Upward hiking

UP . . . UP . . . UP you go

Now you begin to go UP ... keep your head up so you can see the oncoming hikers ... they will more than likely offer you in conversation that it's well worth the effort once you reach the top.

TWO ... the GOOD walking shoes

Okay ... this is no joke. We have walked this a few times .. we see joggers take on the trail with sweat pouring down them ... then you see the occasional tourist wearing "sandals" ... UH HMMMM ... do yourself a favour and wear a good pair of walking shoes ... for your comfort and to avoid being the center of attraction.
Good Walking shoes!
So many steps

Oh! All those steps!

Now, are you ready? STEP one two, STEP one two! (This is the second set of steps)

THREE ... those 100 steps

I was obviously not prepared to walk these steps in one go! I had to stop and rest at 50 ... 70 ... and 80 ... the only reason I didn't stop at 90 was the pure embarrassment of having the elderly pass me by! Here you see both sets of steps (1st is 74, and the second set is 99 )
Waikiki from Diamond Head Summit

FIVE ... breathtaking view worth all those steps

Here is a view that makes all those steps worth it! Once on the top, you will be able to see all of Waikiki, Honolulu in the background ... and as far as the Leeward side of the island. This view is my favorite ... a view of Waikiki and it's beaches and hotels.

Lighthouse

Here is another one of my favorite views from atop Diamond Head ... I must have at least 6 photographs of this lighthouse!
