Introduction | View to the Kremlin - QSL card from Radio Moscow |
When I turn on our local radio station, they always say "News around the world". But after three minutes the news are over and I know as much as I have known before and when they bring the same song the third time it can made me annoyed .....
Many local radio stations always brings the same news and the same music. And if you listen to pernamently, this can be very boring ...
That happend to me about seven years ago. I had a bad cold and I lied in bed. The radio was turned on and I listened to it. Anytime there came a moment where I took my radio because the local programme was always the same. There were some buttons called "SW", "MW" and "LW" and I had no idea what to do with them. So turned the "SW"-button on and in the same moment I could listen to a programme in English. They brought news from around the world and they also reported about the ski race in Semmering, here in Austria. Anytime later there came an announcement "This is London...." and "BBC World Service". I couldn´t believe my ears. I was listening to an english radio station here in Austria! Later I also heard the "Deutsche Welle" and other station from european countries. It fascinated me a lot and later I bought a little world reciever.
In the meanwhile I have two reciever. If time allows I sit down and turn them. But I not only listen to the stations, but I also send them comments about their programs and tell them about reception conditons. And many stations write back and send beautiful "QSL-verification cards", special postcards, where they confirm that the broadcast I listened to, was their station.
I have collected letters and postcards from more than 150 radio stations in 70 countries around the globe in the last seven years. So here I want to show you some of them.
Postcard above is from the "Voice of Russia" (former Radio Moscow) featuring the famous Kremlin. |
| Radio Moscow confirmed my reception report |
| | The "Voice of Russia"- former Radio Moscow A correct reception report must include the DATE of the transmission, the UTC time, the frequency where you heard it and some infos about the reception like the strengh of the signal, noise and if there were any interferences with other stations. At least there should be given some details about the programme you heard. And if you want a confirmation (like I) than ask for a QSL-card.
You should do that in a friendly way like "Can you please confirm that if really was your station that I was listening to......"
And with some luck you get a QSL-card later. The expression "QSL" goes back to morse telegraphy and it means "Can you confirm reception?" |
| Greeting from Wellington, New Zealand |
| | This is New Zealand calling ..... If you want to go to New Zealand and wish any infos whats going on there, try to catch the waves of Radio New Zealand International. I did, sent a letter to Wellington and got this lovely postcard. New Zealand is the farest country I have ever heard and it doesn´t work regulary. You must try it again and again .... |
| The two korean Kims shaking hands |
| | News from the "Land of the Morning Calm" In June 2000 I became a witness of a epoch-making event in korean history: The two leaders of the northern and southern part of Korea, Kim Jong-Il and Kim Dae-jung, shaked hands for the first time and they send out a signal to start a new era of cooperation between the two parts.
Radio Korea International in Seoul reported about this event and I got the chance to make a view inside. And since I listen regulary to RKI, Korea is no strange country anymore. When I went to Korea in April 2002, I also took the chance to visit the radio station and they also take me into the studio to make an interview. When they asked me about my impression of Korea, I could say them that everything is like they report it on radio. They didn´t promised to much ..... |
| Guglielmo Marconi and Reginald Fessenden |
| | Be informed .... with Radio Canada International On December 12th, 1901, Guglielmo Marconi recieved the first transatlantic radio signal at Signal Hill, in St. John´s, Newfoundland. Just a year before, on December 23rd, 1900, the Canadian inventor Reginald Fessenden became the first person to transmit the human voice via radio. Radio Canada International in Montreal commemorates these important achievements in the history of radio with a special QSL-card ..... and I am pleased to have it .... |
| | The late reply of Radio Jordan Radio stations don´t have to answer if they don´t want. I sent twice a reception report to Ukraine, but I ´ve never got a reply. The same was with Kuwait. In some cases it is also necessary to add some International Reply Coupons (which can be changed into stamps) because the radio station doesn´t have enough money.
The card on your left is from Radio Jordan in Amman. It need nearly a year after I got my reply. I never thought to get a QSL, but I got it, although it was late. In some cases I have to patient. Radio Jordan confirmed my reception report with a cerficate and the director of the station signed it personally. What an honour! |
| Ecos del Torbes from Venezuela |
| | Small stations high up in the Andes Many countries in the tropical area use shortwave to provide their people with information. In some cases it is also possible to listen to these broadcasts in Europe or North America. A few years ago I heard "Ecos del Torbes", a radio station from Venezuela. I sent an english letter and they replied in spanish with this pretty postcard .... |
| | Singapore In some cases the domenstic service can be heard easier than the foreign service. Singapore is a very good example. I tried to listen to Radio Singapore International many times, but it never worked. So I tried to recieve the domenestic radio service (Newradio 93,8) and it was easy to listen. I sent a kind letter and a few weeks later the Radio Corporation of Singapore replied with this nice postcard. They also added a pen as a souvenir, although the programme is only for Singapore ..... |
