St. Elisabeth This St Elisabeth beguinage is founded in 1238 by Countess Johanna van Constantinople. |
Between St Martin’s and Our Lady church you find a small village, the Beguinage. |
It’s really surprising to find such a quiet and restful place in the middle of a busy city centre. |
The statue of Countess Johanna van Constantinople can be seen at the inner court. |
The house with the double step-gable was owned by the “upper-begine” and is now used as a museum. (Open every day from 15.00 – 17.00, except Tuesdays and Fridays) |
There are about 40 small white houses, which date from the 17th century. |
