Outside view The towers of this church really dominate the “skyline” of Kortrijk. Baldwin of Constantinopel founds this church in the 13th century, before his crusade. |
Count's Chapel On the right side of the church, you'll find the Count's chapel. This chapel is intended by count Louis van Male as his mortuary chapel. |
In the many niches along the wals you can see the pictures of the "Foresters" and all the Counts of Flanders until the abolition of the Country. |
Most remarkable is the albaster statue of St Catherine (1374), the work of the great sculptur Beauneveu from Valenciennes. |
This church has suffered a lot during the past; it was plundered, burned in de Middle Ages, and finally heavily damaged during the allied bombings July 1944. |
Interior The choir-gallery with its marble covery. |
The great painting “Erection of the Cross” by the famous Flemish painter Anthony Van Dyck. (Van Dyck’s paintings reflect a great influence of P.P. Rubens) |
The windows in the choir-gallery represent the Flemish knighthood and refer to the vault ceiling atop, with his small heraldic lions and the Golden Spurs (see next chapter). |
Golden Spurs After the battle of the Golden Spurs, the Flemish people collected about 500 Golden Spurs left by the French Knights from the Groeningeveld battlefield. These Golden Spurs were hung at the vault-ceiling of Our lady's Church. However the original spurs were stolen back by the French after their Victory in the battle near West Rozebeke in 1382. |
