City Hall City hall is build in Late-Gothic style (1520) and is completely restaurated, that’s why it looks so well preserved. |
The interior of this old City Hall has been modernised, however some rooms still show their historical wealth. |
The statues in the niches represent the Counts of Flanders; these statues were replaces by new ones in the 19th century. |
Detail of the beautifully decorated bay window. |
Old postcards of the City Hall, remark the old costume of the police officer in the front. |
Belfry Date : 14th century In the middle of the Grand Place stands the Belfry, this building has five pointed towers and a (famous) Jacquemart-watch. |
This belfry is also known as the Hall-tower. It’s the only part that remain of the former Cloth-Halls. |
In the sound-holes you see Manten en Kalle, the statues that hit the bell. However these are copies, the original ones were stolen in 1382 and nowadays the original ones hit the bells in the Church of Our Lady in Dyon (France). |
Sidewalk cafés It’s good to sit back on one of the many sidewalk-cafes and enjoy a cool glass of Belgium Beer, or for the sweet-toothed travellers among us, enter a tea-room for a delicious pancake with ice-cream or a great waffle with white sugar and (loads of) whipped cream. (don't worry about the calories, we will work-out when we're back home) |
