General Tips

Either get a guide or a map

I have to admit that I am not the best when it comes to directions.
When confronted with brand new surroundings it is very easy to lose your way, even if you think you recognise an area, chances are you will not remember it perfectly and may easily take a wrong turn.
Either buy a map as soon as you can (although this can make the whole experience feel too organised and wooden) or bring someone whose directions are spot on. Don't trust taxis all the time.
They will often take a longer route or they may not even understand you.

Buy a guidebook

Unless you want a completely spontaneous adventure, and are prepared to miss out on the must sees, bring a book.
It will help pass the time on the trains and will allow you to structure your trip. Of course you do not have to read every last detail and completely spoil your trip, but they'll be many opportunities to use it.

Travelling alone or in a group

If you are travelling on your own good luck. If you are in a group however, it is important that you remember a few things.
1. That you get on well with your fellow travellers. Travelling can be stressful, so make sure you are not going to fall out after the 1st hiccup.
2. Try to agree on your budget, if you all have different ideas on where you want to stay and where to eat, you are going to have a problem. Remember you may not have the opportunity to travel often, so don't waste it arguing.
3.Negotiate. So long as it is not all one way, it is fine and quite healthy to have some give and take. You may miss out on the highlight of the trip if you don't listen to your friends.
