Krak de Chevalier

by MalenaN - last update: Feb 13, 2003

Krak des Chevaliers is the most impressive Crusader Castle.

It is about 10 km north of the road between Tartus and Homs.

The castle can easily be visited on a daytrip from Hama. Both the Cairo and the Riad Hotel are organising tours.

The admission to the castle is 50 SP.
It is very big and well preserved. It takes hours to explore it all.
It is very well built and it stood against many attacks and sieges. It was actually the last castle the Christian Crusaders held when all others had been taken over by the Islamic armies. The Christians had stores of supplies to last for five years but choosed to give it up after a few months - it had become like a prison and it is easy to understand that they choosed to give it up and get a safe departure home.
