The beautiful guildhouse of the Bricklayers in the Steenstraat.

This building has magnificent decorations.

The little Bruges Bear (Brugs Beertje) is the symbol of Brugge (a bit like what the Manneken Pis is for Brussels)

In the 15th century this neighbourhood was the scene of hectic harbour activities. In the middle of this square you see the statue of Jan Van Eyck. Jan Van Eyck was a famous Flemish painter, well known for his masterpiece “Het Lam Gods” which can be seen in the St Baafscathedral in Gent. (See my Gent page chapter St Baafs - Lam Gods)

Near the Jan van Eyck square you also find the Old Customhouse.
The lords of Luxemburg prescribed the customs to be paid on certain goods delivered by the boats.
Nowadays no goods are delivered overhere, all the big ships moor in Zeebrugge.

The Custom house is now the municipal library. Here you see the beautifully decorated entrance door.

Another beautifull building near the Jan Van Eyck square is the house "Roode Steen" it dates from the 16th century, and it has the memorial plate of Georges Rodenbach the autor of the novel "Bruges La Morte" (1892)

The Genthof (nr 7) one of the two latest houses with a wooden front in Brugge.
