Our wildlife is more along the lines of marine life and birds. We have a whale season, which I've found is better to look on from the Blowhole lookout point than to pay for a tour boat; and we clear the beach for monk seals . . . respect the land and preserve wild life. I love to go to Haleiwa and sight the "basking" Hawaiian sea turtles. Mind you, DO NOT TOUCH one, they are protected! |
| | Flying friends! The islands are full of our fine feathered friends. I'm not exactly a birdwatcher, but I do go home and hunt info on a new bird that I spotted that day! This is a sandpiper and we see them all over island. |
Cattle Egrets Here you see a common cattle egret found all throughout the islands, especially on freshly plowed pineapple fields where they scavenge for freshly tilled bugs for dinner! Even with all our red dirt here, you will usually still see the clean bright whiteness of these birds. This one is a little snooty, and uses the crosswalk wherever possible. | | | Look both ways before crossing! |
|
| | Cardinals I collect redbirds. These cardinals were the first species I saw when I arrived on the islands back in 2000. (This picture is best viewed if not enlarged) |
Why did the chicken cross the Road? I am amazed at the number of loose chickens and roosters around the island! It would make sense if we saw them in the countrysides, but we actually saw one running loose at, wait ... you ready for this ... KFC in Mililani ! ! ! This one pictured was found near the lookout point at the bottom of H-3
| | Dolphins Though this is a photograph of trained dolphins at Sea Life Park, I will testify that you can see dolphins off the shoreline frolicking in numbers! We witnessed such a sighting off the westside of O'ahu in the Nanakuli area. |
Sea Turtle from the Big Island This is onne of MANY we found in several tidal pools at the City of Refuge. I have never seen so many sea turtles at one given time!
| | Sea creatures in Big Island tidal pool Please look closely ... what is this? We found this fascinating ~ it looked like white worms at first ... then eight white worms retracted under the rock as we tried to get a closer look. Help us out ... if you know what this is, please email me! |
Yellow Birds ... can you identify these? I have seen these only a few times, but just in the recent months! Perhaps I just have not looked hard enough. Can anyone identify these beautiful birds for me?
| | Urchins of the 3rd kind! Found these is another tidal pool at the City of Refuge. I could have stayed at the tidal pools ALL DAY! |
Check back soon Check back soon for more photographs and entries.
