The Ark We started our city tour at the Ark, or the Citadel. As you can see on the picture, almost no tourists, thats a dream for every amateur photographer. |
The dark steps of the Minaret, it's a good idea to have a headlamp in your day-backpack. |
It is well worth to climb this minaret, you will be rewarded with a splendid view over the city. Here you see the Ark. |
Birds-eye view of the Mir-I-Arab Madrasa. |
Kalyan Mosque On the right side is the Kalyan Mosque. here you see the big Entrance gate. |
The beautifull courtyard, and again no tourists. |
detail of the fine architecture and decorations. |
Mir-I-Arab Madrasa On the other side of the square is the Mir-I-Arab Madrasa. |
It also has some student's cells on the outside, normally these cells are all located at the inside. |
The magnificent blue dome of this Madrasa. |
Another view of the Entrance Gate, seen from the big square in front of the Ark. This square is known as the Registan. This is not the famous Uzbekistan Registan, oh no, that square is in Samarkand, for information and pics see my Uzbekistan page. |
Great, colourful decorations on the walls of the Madrasa. |
Chor Minar This is absolutely my favorite building in Bukhara. This is something you can't miss when you visit Bukhara. As you can see it is located in the middle of a housing estate. When you search for it, you can do some orientation on the four minarets, but when you are closer, then you can't see them anymore, these minarets are not so high. Well then there is only one solution, ask the people or the children on the street, they will be very happy to conduct you towards this magnificent building. |
Detail of the four minarets and their bleu domes. |
This is an old postcard of Chor Minar. This photo is made in 1924, note the storks nests on top of each minaret. I paid 1 US$ for this remarkable postcard. |
The big walls seen from the top of the Entrance Gate. |
From the right side of the Registan, you can see the Poi-Kalyan ensemble with the big Kalyan Minaret and the Mosque and the Madrasa. This picture proves that the most important touristic highlights of this city are all within walking distance. But do not forget to drink regularry, because it was very, very hot. |
Bolo-Khauz Mosque This beautiful Mosque is on the other side of the street, comimg from the Ark. It is great to see the reflections of the pilars in the pool. |
You can just enter through the fence opening, it is not possible to enter the building itself. |
The small minaret just next to the Mosque, I believe it is a bit family of the famous tower of Pisa. |
Kalyan Minaret Detail of the top of the 47 meters high Kalyan Minaret. |
This looks like a postcard, but I can garantee you it is one my own shots. You see the courtyard of the Kalyan Mosque with the Minaret on the background. |
