Along the Blue Ridge Parkway

Unidentified Overlook
To get from my friend's dad's house in West Jefferson, NC to Chimney Rock, NC, we drove part of the way on the Blue Ridge Parkway. This two-lane road, maintained by the National Park Service, runs from Shenandoah NP to Great Smoky Mountains NP along the Applachain mountains. The views in autumn are spectacular and there are numerous overlooks along the road so drivers can stop and admire the natural beauty of these old mountains. For more info on the Parkway, visit http://www.nps.gov/blri/index.htm
From the porch of Flat Top Manor
Along the way we passed Moses Cone Park and decided to stop (my friend's dad had been there before). There is a gorgeous old manor house there that now serves as a visitor center and craft shop. There was woman spinning yarn by hand on a foot-pedal-operated spinning wheel; you could purchase hand-knit items like sweaters and hats made from the yarn. The craft shop has all kinds of beautiful artwork including paintings, stained glass, pottery, quilts, and jewelry. Here are Jim, Jill, and Nicholas!
(And for the curious, Moses Cone--a person--is described as having been "a textile entrepreneur.")
Another view of autumn color. It was such a beautiful day, given that it had been raining the day before.
Another Unidentified Overlook
Raven Rock Overlook
You could see row after row of weathered old peaks wreathed in clouds.
Here you can look back and see where we've come from--that light-colored ribbon is the Parkway clinging to the side of the mountain. Not as spectacular as Europe's Alps, but impressive nonetheless.
Yonahlossee Overlook
Clouds on the move
Here's my friend Jill along the road at the same Yonahlossee Overlook. It was extremely windy and you can see the cloud sneaking up behind her very quickly!

We left the Parkway for a local road after this and had lunch, then continued on to Chimney Rock.
Visit my page on Chimney Rock, NC to see a travelogue with pictures from the park.
