The naval port of Karlskrona (1998) _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Sweden was at the end of 17th century one of the great powers of Europe. To master the Baltic Sea king Karl XI founded a naval base in the south of Sweden, at Karlskrona. The aim was to protect Swedish territory around the Baltic Sea, for instance the two important cities of Stralsund and Riga. Works with the naval base and the city of Karlskrona was to go on for more than 150 years. To enjoy is the naval port, the fortifications and other buildings both in town and on the islands. A ship yard and a rope-walk from 1690 (300 m long) is things to look at. - The agricultural landscape of southern Öland (2000) _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

The Hanseatic town of Visby (1995) _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ This old city on the island of Gotland has a background from 1400th century. The city has -luckily - been protected since 1912 by a plan for preserving the inner city intact (inside the city wall). Outside the wall circle there is a green zone which creates a very nice image of the city. The modern Visby has for that reason grown outside the wall. - The rock carvings in Tanum (1994) _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Carvings from 3200 years ago on rocks. 350 sites with carvings have been detected in the Heritage area which covers 45 km2. Of them the four largest are open for tourists. Tanum is located in Bohuslän, near the main road E6. The figures carved in the stones includes people, animals, ships and symbols. |
Skogskyrkog?rden, the woodland cemetery (1994) _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ The great cemetery in south Stockholm (subway: Skogskyrkog?rden). Crematory building, the Woodland Chapel (architect Gunnar Asplund), The Resurrection Chapel, The Groves of Meditation and Remembrance, the big cross, the landscaping, the burial ground. Gunnar Asplund and Sigurd Lewerentz created this cemetery in an architect competition in 1914. The picture shows the stone wall that fence the church yard. See pictures in Must-see-tips. - The Royal domain of Drottningholm (1991) _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ A palace constructed with inspiration from Versailles, completed around 1700. One part of the palace is now the residence of the Royal Family. The baroque park and the Chinese Pavilion are popular tourist places. The Palace Theatre 1766 is still functioning and is very popular, with its stage machinery still intact. |
Birka and Hovgården (1993) _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Birka was founded around 750 A.D. and is one of the first cities in Scandinavia. Birka is located on the island Björkö in the lake Mälaren. Boats go from Stockholm. The Birka Museum has a permanent exhibition with a model of the old Birka, at the museum many findings from excavations are to be seen. Hovgården is the royal manor on the island Adelsö. - The Engelsberg ironworks (1993) _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Engelsberg is located in Fagersta, north-west some hours from Stockholm. A memory from the first industrial years in Sweden. The buildings are unique and well-preserved. In this place iron ore was melted and forged into steel. |
The mining area of the Great Copper Mountain in Falun (2001) _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ In 1650 over 3000 tons of crude copper was produced by nearly 1000 miners, and Sweden was dominating the copper trade in the world The mine now is one of the oldest and most important mine works in the world.. - Höga kusten, The high coast (2000) _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ The land rising by itself, after the Scandinavian ice cap, has made this coust line arise till 285 meter over the sea. This hills are only 2-3 kilometers from the present shoreline. This region is located in Ångermanland. |
Gammelstad church town, Luleå (1996) _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ At this place is the largest medevial church in Norrland and 425 small red-painted cabins outside the church-yard wall. These church towns were important meeting places. People gathered here and interchanged news. Beside the Gammelstad a town Luleå grow up. Due to land rising the town was moved 10 kilometers south east to the sea, some people stayed in the old town and so it got its name Lule Gammelstad (Old town). The new Luleå is called Lule Nystad (New Town). Gammelstad is now both town and church town. - Laponia (1996) _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ The Laponia is one of the last wilderness of Western Europe. It consists of several national parks: Sarek, Stora Sjöfallet, Padjelanta and the two nature reserves Stubba and Sjaunja. Total area 9400 km2 |
