While on my vacation earlier this month in the Chilcotin, I had been out in my canoe, fishing on Horn Lake for a few hours. When I came ashore for a break, I saw this tiny young chickadee sitting in the gravel by my truck. It appears to have fallen out of it's nest and was injured, one of its eyes was swollen shut.

I put it in my hand and immediately it befriended me by hopping and fluttering up to my shoulder, then on to my hat!!!

As I held it, it began to call.....chickaddeeeeeeee....deeeeeee..........deeeeeeeeee! No sooner, its mother flew by into a nearby tree and answered its call. Then I held it up to the mother and it popped a big juicy bug into it's tiny beak. This seemed to perk it up a bit. I put it in the little birch tree nearby and it sat there passively, occaisionally calling, and it's momma came by again with more food.

I went back to my canoe and fished for a few more hours and upon returning I saw it was still in the tree.

I packed up my camp and hated to leave the little creature behind...it might be prey for a larger animal. I still think of it as my little chickadee :o))

It was very hard to hold the bird in one hand while I tried to focus the camera with the other!!!!

What will become of him???? Will he survive???
