Strolling Around Regent's Park

by yooperprof - last update: Aug 27, 2004

Regency Terraces

John Nash - Regency London
"Before anything else, Regent's Park is a unity, trees and terraces together, a great animal stretched out on the northern edge of Central London. Compared with this, the details are almost unimportant; and it is this, rather than Nash's wonderful stage scenery that keeps the park alive and well-loved. The achievement is - alas - unique: for once neither formal nor informal, neither leafy nor urban, but all the elements acting together to creat the kind of living tissue that we sigh for in primitive or medieval villages and fumble at with such crassness in the latest phase of modern architecture." --- Ian Nairn's London (1966)
Chester Terrace

Chester Terrace

"Chester [Terrace], taut and crisp, its columns held well in to its stomach, a wonderful sight in perspective through the triumphal arches at the ends, best of all in mist or winter sunshine." Nairn's London
