Dordrecht Travel Guide: 99 reviews and 253 photos
Yes, Mr. Rutte, do come out to feel the first rays of early sunshine.....it is true....Spring is on Her way to us, although it still will take some time.......but a day as today is a promise!
There you are, standing in front of you shop with that wonderful, old and fortunately never changed JUGENDSTIL façade....it suits you as does the leather apron!
I see you there, standing at ease,> hands in apron, just taking in that afternoon sun on that 19th February 2002, while I passed by.....but you didn't notice me.....and I thought a penny for his thoughts!
Yes, I see the sign: RUTTE, distillateurs (distiller) since...1872.... so your father and grandfather........
PROUD: the ships, the old merchants houses, the shining water......walking through DORDRECHT is a real feast for those who CAN SEE, can ENJOY......
The rain and most of the clouds disappeared after midday but it was cold, despite the wintry sunshine and that coldness silenced this magnificent scene, made it motionlessly beautiful!
This is the Town hall of DORDRECHT, seen behind a bridge and from a bridge.........can you imagine HOW MANY BRIDGES we have here in our small country, oh, so full of water, abounding in water.....??
Well, I can assure you that I wouldn't volunteer if asked to go count them all!!
See the blue: the patches are getting bigger and bigger, giving the sun a chance to shine, which pleases me because afternoon sunshine is so great for taking photographs.......this is a perfect day!
Have a good look at the walls of the houses: yes, the water can come very high when the river has to transport very much water, sometimes too much water.....
Doesn't it remind you of the canals in AMSTERDAM, UTRECHT, DELFT, LEIDEN, MIDDELBURG and almost all towns and cities in the Netherlands and...............of course, of VENICE, THE QUEEN OF ITALY!!! CLICK here for my VENICE page
All year round there is an abundance of flowers, shops colourful like rainbows, the slides so helpful to struggle more lightly through winter......
there are people that love to climb in trees and to the tops of towers and......on an anchor in the street!
(BY THE WAY: SHE IS NOT DANGEROUS, THIS SILLY WOMAN!!)
It was not easy and here you see that I look like a sort of frog, hanging there, weak with laughter, before I was on top of that cold, iron anchor.......
But....I made it to the top as next photograph proves!
<hr color ="BLUE"width="350">
a bit cold, a bit rusty, but I can assure you I felt good and safe there at my anchorage!!!!
Oh, the coming down again?? Was much easier than climbing up, believe me and....I didn't break a leg.....
Can you, seeing this photo, imagine how very fond so many artists, Dutch as well as from abroad, were about the atmosphere here in The Netherlands, about our skies, our water, the special Dutch light, our wonderful boats??
Already thinking about coming here during your next holiday and see it all for yourself?
You are most welcome!!!!
On one side of the water our precious and wonderful flat-bottomed boats and on the other side the white-topped mooring-posts, like soldiers, rigid and motionless, perfectly in line ......
How about this saying: VERTE BEGINT BIJ DORDT
HIER LEEFT DE WAL
EN DAAR IS OVERAL
ALTIJD OGEN TEKORT
words from the Dutch Poet Ed Leeflang.
These words mean: distance starts at Dordt, here the quayside lives and there is more, far more to see than your eyes can take in.........
I did, I did meet Spring, although the wind was cold, my nose wet and red, tears ran down my cheeks in the early morning.......but seeing this: yes, I recognised Spring!! In DORDRECHT......
These wonderful tablets are placed in between the windows of the ground floor and of the first floor: in pride of place!
There are tablets with maxims, sayings, rhymes or......other have reliefs, colourful ornaments, most also have the date of the year in which the house was built and the name of the house.
This particular house was built in 1585 AD.
The name often refers to the owner's job or to words of the Holy Bible.
I have to go to the Library to find out what is on this tablet: the letters are difficult to interpret because nowadays we use the same sounds but different characters.....so........try to be patient !!!!!
This house is called: INT GROENE LAKEN. It was built in 1616 AD.
Laken was very fine, woollen fabric for cloaks etc..
The relief shows us piles of green LAKEN: the owner can have been> a merchant or the factory-owner and the people that live in this house now will probably know more about its history as will the city's Archive.>
BY THE WAY:NOWADAYS THESE HOUSES ARE EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE!!!!
These old-dutch words are on the tablet:
>BEENNE DIE WEELDE
SIN STERKER ALS SA
MSON TALLE DAGEN
The text in nowadays Dutch are: BENEN DIE WEELDE KUNNEN DRAGEN, ZIJN STERKER DAN SAMSON OOIT WAS.
Now I shall try to translate this saying, which is still in use :Legs that are able to bear wealth, are stronger than Samson ever was!
Here the text is: DIT HUYS SY GODT BEQVAM
DEXTER IS SIJNEN NAEM
HY LEYT WEL DE PLEYSTER
MAER GODT IS DE MEYSTER
Translation in nowadays Dutch: dit huis is God lief
"de ekster" is zijn naam
het maakt het leven wel zoet
maar God is de Meester
In English> God looks after this house
Its name is The Magpie"
It (the house) is making life good
but God is the Almighty
This house was constructed in 1651 AD.
The photo of this house is here because the next two photographs are details of this wonderful façade!
The mermaid and her love hewn out of stone and the second one is one of the festoons, also carved in stone!
For whom is interested: at the VVV (Tourist Office) you can hire a set of earphones with a cassette which will "lead" you through town to the most impressive FAçADES!
The address of the VVV (Tourist Office)is:
VVV Zuid-Holland Zuid,
Tel. 0900 - 463.68.88
email: info@ vvvzhz.nl
or have a look at: www.dordrecht.nl
they love each other dearly and .....are made of stone!
Petrified forever, a sweet mermaid and her beloved one.
The use of the word "GUIRLANDE" goes back to the year
1588 and means: a decoration of green and flowers which was used in France.
We probably love it very much and started using them too, in green and flowers and even.......in stone, almost always under upstairs windows.
These old houses don't have window sills as we all have now, because then it wouldn't be possible to adorn your house with these fascinating, handmade of course, festoons.
Some houses can have 4-6-8 of these guirlandes!
And....haven't people always loved to show off their wealth!!!!!!
Hey, little boy!!!! why are you there? and why nothing on, it is cold, winter...remember.....?
Is there anything I can do for you?
No, then am I allowed to take a photograph of you to put in my album?
Thanks very much and try to stay warm........
Yes, you see right: the four clockfaces are indeed on top of the tower, the place where I have been more than once: so enjoyable the view, so fresh the breeze that comes over the waters that surround this city and make your eyes water which is a little price to pay.......the joy is hundredfold!
I feel sssooooo very PRIVILEGED......therefore I feel ssoooooo SPOILT AND even ASHAMED....knowing that so many have so little or even nothing...
A well-stocked cheese shop here in DORDRECHT....
being a vegetarian CHEESE is very important to me and I am fond of all kinds of cheese!!
Oh, a vegetarian and then to Argentina??? Did you manage ?? yes of course I did, I am a traveller, being a vegetarian in ARGENTINA was quite strange and not understood but accepted..........
Ooohhhh, see: A HOUSE FOR EVERY LONELY MOUSE !!!!!!
Very, very softly I called and squeaked (I hoped that the hard working shop-assistants would hear me!! and surely you can understand why!) and oh, oh, oh......one lonely mouse came to the door of its house to say HI to me!
This made my day THE day........
No one can deny that these are SPRING'S messengers, announcing her arrival.
Tender blue, sweet violet, joyous yellow, fresh green...
The only thing for us to do is..wait... wait patiently and be alert!
She'll give hint after hint to let us know She is on her way to The Netherlands, that Low Land, cold, chilly and especially wet, with wild skies!!!
They are on that table too: not afraid of the cold wind, enjoying the few meagre rays of wintry sunshine!
They don't know our yearning for ice to skate on, so.... we surrender, join the club of violets and (try) to enjoy the early arrival of Spring that we are so looking forward to...but preferably after a period of ice and skating!
Time to drive home again! No canal here but just cobble stones, old, very old, houses, each one built to the owners taste and wallet and in the background again the Grote Kerk......
What a day this was: well-filled with surprises, joy, pleasure, some rain and some sunshine, laughter and much more......
Homeward bound with warm heart
PLEASE SEE MY NEXT TRAVELOGUE, although it is still under construction!
and....they did what they were made for: poured bucket after bucket of cold rain over DORDRECHT so.....what would you think we did: yes, we went to our friends.
Here you see the tower of the Grote Kerk, which I love to climb to enjoy the terrific VIEW but.......not today; today is a day to keep low.......
And have a good look: DORDRECHT too, is a city of canals and much, much water and boats and ports!
DORDRECHT is situated on the riverbanks of DORDTSE KIL and river MERWEDE.
And....don't forget only about 20 km. from ROTTERDAM... CLICK here for my ROTTERDAM page....
to this place: for all kind of tasty things, sweet or savoury!!!!
To chat with the family; to enjoy the lunch, to get warm again; to admire the WONDERFUL WEDDING ALBUM mother van der Sterre created on the ocassion of one of her three daughters' wedding day.........so wonderful!
She came and sat at our table to show us her CREATION, a real work of Art .....she has three daughters, two of them are helping in the shop and conditorei!
The next album she will make will be for daughter Marijn who is going to get married within 12 weeks........and who looked very happy....and which young woman wouldn't???
AND LISTEN: THE DAY she, MARIJN, was born, her father was baking some sweet cakes and........called them APPEL-MARIJNTJES after the newborn baby! Isn't that great??
When in DORDRECHT, do buy some!!!!
Here comes their address:
C.M. v.d. STERRE,
Tel. 078 - 613.32.86: you can make reservations!!!!
This is the place to go for coffee, tea, a fantastic warm lunch and other mouthwatering things.
Make your choice, point your finger at all you would like to have and do sit down. After a short time it will all appear on your table; Mother van de Sterre or one of her daughters will help you very friendly, as if you are a V.I.P.
Don't forget to buy some things to taste while travelling home or for those who you would love to surprise with something sweet and good!
Thanks to the still bare trees you can see and even see through the Gothic windows......
Have a good look and you will see (along the bottom of the photograph) the roofs of low houses built against the walls of the church.
Isn't it good to know that that big and thick, strong and high wall of the House of God himself is part of your dwelling?
In many places they are no longer used to live in but are little shops, mostly for tourists, as I saw e.g.in HEIDELBERG, GERMANY. CLICK here for my HEIDELBERG page..
In the previous photograph as well as in this one you can see the houses which seem to have been built against the church and.......it is true: Centuries ago people built their houses, low houses against the walls of the church.
The churchwall was already there so they only had to build 3 walls themselves!!!!!
This can be seen in many, many cities e.g. Dordrecht, Haarlem, Gouda, and I saw the same phenomenon abroad.
Here and again also abroad people built their houses against the defence walls of the towns which you can see in AMERSFOORT in The Netherlands and.....I saw these (dark) houses built against the walls in ISTANBUL, TURKEY CLICK here for my ISTANBUL page where they are still in use for many a family!
