Tucson

Favourite Surprise Destination

Saguaro National Park
I only came here to pick up a hire car and avoid a one way travel fee, when I got here and found out just what there is to do here I realised that the day that I'd budgetted on was far too little! I stretched it out to a second day, but I think that a minimum of a week would be the least to do it justice...

Hills to the west of Tucson

The Saguaro can grow up to 50' high and weigh 8 tons! It is the most visible symbols of the Sonoran Desert, capable of supporting an entire ecosystem in it's own right!

Arizona Sonora Desert Museum

One of a pair of Pumas at the Arizona Sonoran Desert Museum, I always feel a bit uneasy about zoos with the animals caged in. Most animals here however have been rescued in one way or another and nursed back to health and generally seem happy enough in decent sized enclosures. Visit the Desert Museum if you want an insight into what makes this unique habitat tick!
Mountain Lion
Prairie Dog

Arizona Sonora Desert Museum

The cheeky and playful Prairie Dogs were my favourite animals at the zoo, you could stand there and watch their antics all day and still want more!

Another great animal that you could watch all day is the Otter, of which they have a pair doing the laps in the zoo's 'water zone'

Signal Hill - Saguaro National Park West

Located in the Tucson Mountain District, on the Scenic Badaja Loop Road is the picnic area of Signal Hill. A five minute hike gets you to the top, which commands impressive views as well as ancient Native American Pictoglyphs. Watch out for Rattlesnakes, as there are plenty of warning signs posted here!

Biosphere

Just 30 miles N. of Tucson is a miniature working (mostly!) model of 'Biosphere 1' (Planet Earth). in '91 8 people were sealed up to survive in isolation for 2 years (they used to have to wait for two weeks in order to grow enough coffee beans for one cup of coffee each!). They had just started 'Under the Dome' tours when we arrived - which was fantastic and reminded me of that classic Sci-Fi flick, 'Silent Running' starring Bruce Dern...

Biosphere Aquarium

An small but extensive aquarium is housed below Biosphere 2, including a view into the 'Ocean' zone housed within Biosphere 2 itself. This is part of the admission ticket.
Coral Creatures
Saguaro Sentinel

Farewell Tucson

For me the Saguaro was Tucson's ambassador, and when we finally saw the last one we knew we had finally left.

Time for me to hand over to Bottleofdoom's excellent site at http://www.virtualtourist.com/m/18db2/b73a6/3/#T

I've never known anyone who's actually gone to the biosphere. So, tourist trap or worthwhile?
