The smallest town on Earth (they themselves say!) and a most wonderful one indeed!
Our stay there was great: in the BELGIAN ARDENNES.....
Bungalowpark sunclass grand-Han
rue d"andenne, 20
6940 PETIT-HAN, DURBUY
Tel. 086/212.739
OURS for a WEEK, this house and despite the rain: it was a GREAT WEEK.....
Walking through the narrow alleys in DURBUY you could have taken a photograph every 10 steps.....
Walking through the little streets of the littlest town in Europe to find a baker's....
Here too, an old bike with a basket and flowers, very picturesque against that green wall!
Every house is a little jewel, well cared for and even in autumn still adorned with flowers....a real pleasure to walk there....and feel amazed...
So very old but...adorned with basket and plants by its owner and used as a decoration....in combination with the cobble stones and the ancient walls, very fine!
Somewhere is a corner in DURBUY never stopping reading....like me: I am a born reader and....writer of prose and poems!
Another wall built of pieces of rock and again an old bike with flowers.
The rain made everything greener than green and covered in moss..
This precious wall is very worthy of being scrutinized and doing so I discovered lots of interesting things like minute plants and little beetles and gloriously green moss....
Here a detail of the same wall and don't tell me that you don't like it!
Enlarge that photo and enjoy the colours and structures......
And even in that smallest of small towns there is a castle opposite the TOPIAIRE" .
A TOPIARY is a place where real garden artists cut trees (buxus) in special attractive models and scenes. Photos lower down this page!
Here I am visiting the TOPIARY in DURBUY and taking this and the next photos!
Enjoy!
Quiet debate going on here, endlessly going on and on...
Buxus trying to reach heaven.....as we all try to do, or don't we??
Two people practising canoeing but....will they ever canoe on the river l'Ourthe, flowing behind their backs??? I doubt it !
We shall never know the winner because they never move.....
The castle is behind their backs....but they will never see it!
Small town, small house, small windows and the people who live there? I haven't seen them.....
Oh, we have bikes galore so the very old ones we can use to decorate house and street.....
Here is that small window in close up.....I love the crocheted curtains, small but delicately created with flowers....
At the end of this smallest town lies this folded, pleated rock, very nice view....Here is also the starting point of a nice walk.
Go to the Tourist office (VVV) and ask for info and ideas.....
Temptation?? Pack your bag and go and explore this place in the very nice ARDENNES.
Luckily I am used to rain so have learned not to be bothered by it
and only see the beauty it can create....
This dear has to be taken to the sick bay!
Although I am afraid that there is nothing we can do for it!!
So much rain did we have there that the river L'Ourthe flooded the road and cycle path.....
Such a pleasure to see but always too high in trees as if teasing me: catch me if you can, but you can't!!
Looking at the foliage you would think it is one tree, but....there are two treetrunks so two trees are close friends......
Where water is, river or canal, sea or ocean, we all love being there.
What better to do then have a 1 day (or more days) boat trip on the river MEUSE here in the Ardennes???
I can recommend it to you....
I once was in DINANT when a few streets were closed because they were full of pieces, large and smaller of rock,; this rock formations create dangerous situations in some places of the city!
Again a city divided by a river, like Amsterdam, London, Paris, Budapest, Vienna and so many more!
The camping was situated quite high on the rocks and I didn't believe that I had to drive up so high to reach it but...once started up there was no way to turn back......
This wondrous castle can be visited....don't miss the chance while you are there!
I didn't make it so it is still in my wish-list to visit the castle.....
So lovely and tasty: the traditional (large!) cookies to celebrate St. Nicolas on 5th December in Belgium as well as in The Netherlands of course...
It was a Sunday and the shop was closed but I managed to take these photographs from outside.....
Nice, inviting shop window!!
A BOAT TOUR SUR LA MEUSE , doesn't that sound like a very pleasant idea?? And I can assure you, from own experience, that you will regret if you don't embark!
While staying at DURBUY we made some trips and also visited the town of COO with its nice falls.
It was great to have tea and cake in the restaurant near these falls....
Imagine you hear the water and feel the sparkling droplets in your face...
Another outing, that day to HUY and the first person we met was this newspaper reader..
I immediately liked this statue ....
The reader in close up!
Handsome face and nice hat.....
Of course we visited the church and I discovered this nice statue of Maria with child....
I had to take this face in close up....so sweet......
Oh, how I like this and I love such surprises on entering a church, castle or mansion, eye-catchers!
Having my trip to ARGENTINA in mind I bought some extremely fine clothes here and thought that the idea that I would spend my CHRISTMAS DAYS AND NEW YEARS EVE AND DAY there was a good, very good excuse to pamper myself and buy!!
This is in the nice little town of HUY and.......I bought the clothes that were on this mannequin!!!
To wear during the festive days in ARGENTINA in the year 2002, while visiting friends there!
He looks so sad this little musician, doesn't he?
these cows seem to ask every passer-by!
Always curious, these milkmaids.
They are lucky to be able to feel the fresh air and can watch all that is happening around the farmhouse...
Saw them on our way to NAMUR (everything by car), more chapters in next TRAVELOGUE....
While typing this text we have already get used to that Euro, but really like it: no, we don't...
Too many coins......and how to "feel" now if something is expensive or not, worth the Euros they ask for it or not.
Surely, all prices are higher and even too high now.....many of us feel poor now!
Apart from rainy, that day was a very windy and cold one so....we had to taste the GL?HWEIN TIME AND AGAIN to stay warm....
