The first wall of the castle date from Roman times; early fortifications were built in the 9th century. A small fort was built in the 13th century and a palace in the 15th century. In 1809, Napoleon reduced it to ruins.

The history of Devin Castle is long. Devin Castle is one of the most important national monuments. It is located just west of Bratislava, easily reached by public transportation. Just buy 2 ticket for 7 crowns each, one to get you there and one to get you back to town, and catch Bus 29 at the beginning of it's route and get off at the end. It is situated on a limestone hill above the confluence of the Danube and Morova rivers. It's location became a well known trading center as early as 5000 BC. The oldest settlement of Devin dates from the Stone Age; evidence to this has been documented by finds in a village of Neolithic people. Archaeologists have also found evidence from the Bronze Age (1800 BC) and the Middle Bronze Age (1500 BC). The Celts came into the region during the 3rd century BC and began building in the area. Evidence includes iron plows, knives, weaving tools, etc. Many artifacts have been found which were brought in to the region from other places. These are mostly jewels, coins, and metal parts of garments. The Celtic settlement on Devin was destroyed by German tribes during the early 1st century.

The Romans then moved in, and Devin became a strategic outpost of the Roman legions. Many pieces of ceramics, coins, potsherds, oil lamps, bronze artifacts, etc. have been found. After the Romans left the region, Devin became a temporary home for many different tribes who traveled along the Danube.

The Slavs began arriving during the 6th century AD. Prince od Great Moravia Rastislav, an outstanding political and strategic thinker, realized that the central part of Great Moravia must be defended. Devin gradually developed as a great castle. The castle was inherited by and donated to various owners through the 16th century. The construction of the castle was probably completely finished by early 1600. It was reconstructed during the 17th and 18th century even though it gradually lost its strategic importance. In 1809, Napoleon's army completely destroyed this once great castle.

Devin Castle helped to shape the Slovak national consciousness when patriotic trips to the castle began in 1836. In 1961, Devin was declared to be a national cultural monument, and in 1985, by decree of the Bratislava National Committee, Devin Castle rock is defined as "a very prominent territory belonging to the protective zone of the protected area Small Carpathians." Today Devin Castle is a wonderful tourist attraction worthy of spending several hours seeing.

Erected on a limestone rock it stretches over the confluence of the Danube and Morava rivers. The castle hill was once a site of a Roman fortress. According to the oldest written evidence the castle already existed in 864, but the castle hill, because of the victinity of the Panonian Road, was most probably inhabited much earlier. Devin rankedamong to most important Greater Moravian castles. It retained its strategic importance until the end of the 17th century. In 1809, it was destroyed by the Napoleon armies.

Build straight over the surface of the Danube and Morava rivers, its tower is a bastion of a mighty castle, now partly reconstructed and preserved. Devin castle is a symbol of Slovak national awareness and of friendly relations among the Slavic nations. Since 1836 it has been a venue of Slovak national pilgrimages initiated by the Stur's group.
