Chiesa dei Frari An example of Fransiscan architecture at its finest. Inside you'll find a marvelous altar by Titian with his famous paint "Assumption" rising above it, as well as Bellini's "Madonna and Four Saints." |
Chiesa di Santa Maria della Salute Simply known as La Salute, this baroque basilica seemingly guards the entrance of the Grand Canal. The church was designed by Longhena to thank God for delivering Venice from the plague. |
Chiesa dei Santi Giovanni e Paolo The final resting place of the Doges, this is one of the oldest churches in Venice. It is a truly Gothic design with statues of the Dominicans lining the roofline. |
Chiesa dei Gesuiti This is one of the newer churches, dating from the 18th century, built in an extravagantly baroque style. Inside you'll find Titian's Martyrdom of St. Lawrence. |
Church of S. Moise A magnificent baroque facade and an incredible organ inside. |
San Marco The most famous of all (see in "must-see activities"). |
San Zaccaria This is the most interesting church that I visited. It blends Byzantine, Gothic and Renaissance elements into its beautiful whole. The facade is much newer than the 9th century church, which has eight of the Doges buried in its crypt. |
S. Giorgio Maggiore The dramatic location of this church is only part of its appeal. It sits on the very tip of the island of Giudecca which makes it visible from the Doge's Palace. It was designed by the famous Andrea Palladio in the late 16th century and famous artists such as Tintoretto contributed to its interior grandeur. |
