Tabaco plays an important role in Kampens economy since the beginning of the 1800ths. The first two tabaco factories opened in 1813 in Kampen. In 1826 the first big sigarmaker came to Kampen. In 1880 40% of the Kamper workers worked in this industry: 1400 people made 1,5 miljoen sigars a week! In 1921 the ´Wet op de Tabaksaccijnzen´, a law that introduced duty for tabaco products, made an end to this business. The recession in the 1930´s and the war did the rest. Now you can see the history of the tabaco industry in the Tabaksmuseum: Tabaksmuseum Botermarkt 3 Opened on appointment. Tel: 038-3325353.
