NIGHTLIFE GLOSSARY

NIGHTLIFE GLOSSARY

There are a lot of terms used to express how that service will be charged from you. I will do my best t help you understand those term and mechanisms.
COUVERT: 1. (Restaurant) Entree. Generally a basket with fresh bread or toasts, butter, some picles or carrots, just to snack while you decide what to order. It shouldn't cost more than R$7,00 unless the couvert itself is almost a meal, like Aquarela's. 2. (Night Clubs or Restaurants) Short form for "Couvert Artistico".

COUVERT ARTISTICO: 1. (Night Clubs or Restaurants) Couvert artistico is the fee that you pay to the artist performing at the nightclub/restaurant. Some places have two or three different couvert prices - depending on how close to the performance you'll be sitting. At French Quartier, for instance, the couvert varies not only from where you are sitting but also wich day of the week that is.

CONSUMACAO MINIMA: 1. (Night Clubs and Fancy Restaurants)Often called only "Consumacao", it indicates the minimum amount of money you have to spend in that stablishment. If the "consumacao" at a place is of R$10,00 it means that if you only have a bottle of water, you have to pay R$10 anyway. The worst that could happen to you however is to loose the control paper they hand you at the entrance - it often will imply on the payment of a 150 - 1000 reais' fine. Some places have different consumacao rates for men and women.

ENTRADA: 1. Entrada is the money you pay just to get in the place. Some places have entrada and consumacao! It's absurd, I know, but happens.

10% OP: 1. Abreviation for "10% opcional". Generally all the bills come with those 10% added - the tip. However those 10% are optional and you can choose not to pay them. The waiters wont be very happy, but should you think the service wasn't worth it, you can simply not tip. Right?

Interesting tips about Brazil! There are 35 rated pages about Salvador da Bahia now, so your "Salvador needs a VT page" tip is rather old... Kisses from Italy, Michele

Interesting page about Brazil! I spent more than 25 years drinking tap water there and never had any problems. Or perhaps the water is the source of all of my problems?! LOL !!! Abraços :))) PS In the south tap water is really safe, everybody drinks it :)
