VIOLENCE

by martinelli - last update: May 9, 2002

Brazil is officially a democracy. Well. I wont comment that much. I will just show you some pictures, you think for yourselves.

The pictures that follow were taken on a pacific demonstration held on May 16th 2001. Goal of the demonstration: students were asking for the president of the senate and all others involved in the fraude of the scoreboard of votings in the National Congress to loose their political rights and get proper punishment.

Details:

1) The president of the senate then, ANTONIO CARLOS MAGALHAES, alias ACM, owns my state. So that you have an idea, when his older son died, he changed the name of the airport (that used to be July 2nd - date of indepence of Bahia) to Luis Eduardo Magalhaes - his son's name. He is the most cruel man in the world, and in one day he passes by me and I happen to have a coconut on my hands, for Christ I swear I'll aim his head. He owns a tv channel (89% of audience in the state), a newspaper and much more other things.

2) The demostration was being held inside the University Campus of Canela. In Brazil, Federal University areas are Federal territory and therefore the military police is not allowed in unless it is called in by the campus' mayor.

Now, to the pics.

None of the pictures is mine, and I have no idea who took them. A friend sent me them through e-mail.
[...] Police used excessive force to disperse demonstrators on several occasions during the year, resulting in serious injuries and at least one death (see Sections 1.a. and 1.c.). [...] In May Bahia state police entered the campus of the Federal University of Bahia and used tear gas against thousands of protesters who were calling for the removal of Senator (and former Bahia governor) Antonio Carlos Magalhaes, reportedly injuring as many as 30 persons.[...]

UNIVERSIDADE VIOLADA REAGE

E reage!
TV Channel Owned by Antonio Carlos Magalhaes (ACM) ignores conflicts

GloboNet demanded formal explaining from its afiliated TV Bahia, owned by relatives of the senator Antonio Carlos Magalhaes (Liberal Front Party - Bahia)for not sending a broadcasting team to report, last thursday, the manifestation in wich police severely repressed students and protesters who asked for the ceasing of ACM's political rights, at the center of Salvador.

The images broadcasted the same day by National Daily were shot by an amateur cinegraphist from the Bank Workers Union.

Interesting tips about Brazil! There are 35 rated pages about Salvador da Bahia now, so your "Salvador needs a VT page" tip is rather old... Kisses from Italy, Michele

Interesting page about Brazil! I spent more than 25 years drinking tap water there and never had any problems. Or perhaps the water is the source of all of my problems?! LOL !!! Abraços :))) PS In the south tap water is really safe, everybody drinks it :)
