Thermal Activity Area.

Thermal areas.

Whakarewarewa

This is one of the many thermal areas you can visit in and around Rotorua. See how much head there is around the place! Traditionally Maoris cooked in the hot water.
Geyser.
It looks like smoke, but this is steam rising.
Boiling mud.
The sulphur and mud rise to coat the surrounding fauna around this mud pool. If only I could give you a "scratch and smell"!! Just imagine rotting eggs and that is about it!
Geyser activity.
At Whakarewarewa still, here is a geyser. This is like a blowhole with boiling water, very impressive.
Geyser.
These geysers go pretty high when they are blowing. They don't "perform" non-stop. After the recent practice of blocking town outlets (city people used to channel this hot water into their houses to heat water), these geysers are now blowing more frequently and to a higher point.
Sulphur terraces.
Boiling mud.
It looks quite like the surface of the Moon! But this boiling mud is hot, smooth, steamy, and smells of sulphur. The patterns change constantly.
Boiling mud.
I tried to capture a 'blob' of mud midair and after many photos, this is the nearest I got!
Can you believe they make facial mudpacks from this stuff.
Boiling mud.
I love to watch the ever changing shapes of the 'plops'. Of course you never see the same shape twice! And it looks so soft, but I know it is very dangerous.
Boiling mud.
The patterns in the mud are unique and endless.
Thermal activity.
A steamy wilderness that resembles the surface of the moon.
