Sheraton Moorea The Sheraton Moorea is located between two of the most beatiful bays in the world: Cook's Bay and Oponohu Bay. The hotel is a 30-40 minute shuttle ride from the aiport. |
The main restaurant/bar, spa, and the fitness center were located in this building. |
Cook's Bay We rented bikes and rode to Cook's Bay. This is a view of the bay from the road, with the Paul Gaugain cruise ship in the background. |
This shot was taken as we were approaching Cook's Bay by boat. |
Mt. Mouaputa, viewed from Cook's Bay. |
If you look closely, you can see a hole through Mt. Mouaputa. According to local legend, the hole was created when Pai, a legendary Polynesian hero, hurled a spear at Hiro, the Polynesian God of Thieves, who was attempting to steal Mt. Rotui and tow it behind is mighty canoe. The spear missed, creating the hole. |
The other interesting thing about Mt. Mouaputa is that it looks like a man's face, turned on it's side. You can easily make out the chin, lips, nostril, and nose. |
Island Tour by Boat An island tour by boat is a great way to see Moorea. We arranged our tour through the activity center at the Sheraton Moorea. |
The first stop on the boat tour was Opunohu Bay. This is where the 1984 film the Bounty, starring Mel Gibson and Anthony Hopkins, was shot. |
Island Tour by Boat (cont.) Our tour guide told us that we might see some dolphins if we were lucky. Well, we really lucked out. We came across a pod of about twenty dolphins. They were very playful. A few of them jumped out of the water and many of them swam next to the boat. |
Island Tour by Boat (cont.) The boat stopped at Motu Fareone for snorkeling, ray feeding, and a picnic lunch. |
People gathered in the shallow water to hand feed the rays. |
The rays will eat food right out of your hand. |
Motu Fareone has a nice shaded area for eating lunch. |
Moorea Sunsets Moorea had some spectacular sunsets. |
After check-in, the porter led us down this walkway to our over-water bungalow. |
Moorea Sunrise A great thing about this north facing hotel was that the sunrise and sunset were both over the water. The shots on this page were all taken shortly after sunrise. |
Each over water bungalow has a private deck with table & chairs, a small platform for sun batching, and a stairway leading into the water. |
Inside the Bungalow Here are a few shots from the interior of the bungalow. This hotel just opened in October 2000, so everything was very new. Some of the nicer features were a CD player, a remote control for the lights and A/C, and a very nice bathroom. But the best feature was the glass panel on the floor, allowing you to see through to the water. At night you can flip on a light switch and watch the fish gather in the light. |
Sheraton Moorea (cont.) Of the three places that we stayed during this trip, the Sheraton was the only one with a pool. |
There was also a nice, private beach. |
