Food in Amsterdam

by Gypsy_Saskia - last update: Sep 10, 2002

Me and food are great friends and Amsterdam is a great city for food lovers. You will find restaurants from all over the world and also a lot of supermarkets that sell foreign products.

Many African/Asian/Middle Eastern restaurants are concentrated around the Albert Cuyp Straat in De Pijp. Here you will find great food for less than 10 euro's. It is about 10 minutes by tram from central station.

In the hart of the city center, there are many rip-offs. Some good restaurants here are situated around Spui (Caprese for Italian, Dante for lunch and simple dinner, Kantjil en de Tijger for Javanese and more). A good one for pub food is the Tara. Also Hoopman on Leidseplein is ok.

Just behind Leidseplein is a street with loads of restaurants, many good ones there (eg Japan Inn, a popular Japanes restaurant).

The Jordaan is full of nice restaurants. The Westerstraat and Lindengracht and all their side streets have a lot to offer (Wegbrans, Jean Jean, Daalder, De Zagerij, De Eetkamer van de Jordaan and many more).

The Utrechtsestraat has some nice restaurants: spanish, indonesian, etcetera. Plus some nice bars for the after dinner drinks.

The Zeedijk and Nieuwmarkt offer a lot as well. The Bird is a well known Thai, but not so good. The small Thai Little Prince is much better. On Nieuwmarkt, I like Bern, great cheese fondue and a few other dishes.
