Fire escape building NY was destroyed by fire several times because the main part of the houses are built in wood. It explains why there is so few ancient buildings.
The people has kept a huge fear of fire and eventhough the fire escapes are sometimes used by burglars, they have put this kind of stairs on the frontage.

The popular fashion is launched first in USA and some months later in the Old Continent.
My daughter explained me that, when I ask her if we can find the trouser or the shoes she wanted in Paris.
