Montmartre Cemetary

by GUYON - last update: Jan 17, 2003

Guitry's Grave

Guitry
Less known than Père Lachaise, this cemetary has also its famous occupiers, as Sacha Guitry and his father Lucien who great the visitors behind the main entrance.

Sacha Guitry is known for his comedies and films. He teached history to the French people with the films : "Si Versailles m'était conté" (If Versailles was told to me), "Si Paris m'était conté" (If Paris was told to me). He made us laughing with his humour, generally against women : he was a specialist of the women and he married several times.

He said : je suis contre les femmes, tout contre (an untranslatable joke : I am against women, very close).
Graves

Graves under the metro

The Cemetary is set up in a former quarry avenue Rachel (18° arrondissement) - metro : Place Clichy).

He has a lot of famous occupiers : Marguerite Gauthier (the Lady of the Camellias), Alfred de Vigny the poet, Henry Beyle well known as Stendhal (a novellist), Emile Zola (also a novellist), Aldolphe Sax (the inventor of the saxophone), Edgar Degas the painter, Greuze a colleague of the previous, and so many others.

The metro passes upon the cemetary but the tenants do not seem to be disturbed.

Baudin's grave

Baudin was a representant of the congress when Napoleon III sized the power (1851).

He tried to resist with some Parisians workers.

On a barricade, a man told him :"Don't worry, you will keep your 25 francs wages" (the daily indemnity for a representant).

He answered :"Look how one dieds for 25 francs per day". And he climbed on the barricades and was injured to death by a bullet.

Tree

A crying tree

Have a look to this tree which is perpetually crying on a grave.

A monumental grave

When we see this grave, we are not sure that everybody is completly equal in front of death.

Chateau

Chateau des Brouillards

Near the Montmartre Cemetary, allee des Brouillard, there is this curious castle.

Built during the 18° century, it was used as a countryside mansion.
