Louvre

by GUYON - last update: Jan 7, 2003

I prefer to come to the Louvre on Sunday morning between 9 to 10AM.
I pass by the Carrousel entrance which communicates with the parking but there is a pedestrian entrance near the Arc de Triomphe of the Carrousel.
There are other entrances : Porte des Lions (on the Seine bank) & 99 rue de Rivoli.
Some days, there are too much people and the Museum must be closed for the new visitors. It occurres rather on the afternoon.
Previously, the maps were more visible.

Do you like to queue ?

This is the traditional image of the Pyramide with its file of visitors. Most of them ignore there is an other queue within the Pyramide.

The pic was shot a free Sunday, out of the touristical period.

There are other entrances less busy (see the prior chapter).

Where do you prefer to be ?

Here, at this entrance, rue de Rivoli.

Breakfast

First of all : the breakfast in one of the restaurants of the gallery.

The organization of the gallery is rare in France : a lot of tables in front of different take away restaurants.

The photograph is shot in the Pyramide.

The "round thing" in the middle of the stair is a lift for disable persons.

One of my preferite statues.

A roman copy of a Greek scupture.

What are the most visited works of the Louvre : Joconda, Samothrace Victory, Venus of Milo.

I repete. I prefer this Aphrodite.

Samothrace Victory

This statue is on the top of a stair. So it is one of the most famous of the museum though it is not one of the best.

Glass and stone

This pic, within the Pyramide, shows the mix between the ancient building and the glass of the Pyramide.

Very well Mister Pei ! (the architect)

Short history

When the King Philippe Auguste left Paris for the Cruisades in 1190, he decided the construction of a fortress to protect the West of Paris against Richard Lion Heart who was (also) the Duke of Normandy : the LOUVRE.

The Castle became one of the residences of the French Kings.

During the Renaissance, François 1st destroyed the castle and began to set up the current buildings. They became during the 16th Century the head of the government.

Louis 14th was reluctant to stay in a town which had run a revolt (la Fronde) during his youth and he prefered the hunting pavilion of his father : Versailles.

The Louvre was transformed in Museum in 1793 (one of the oldest museums in the world).

The photo (shot from Louvre) shows the Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel and a part of the Jardin des Tuilleries, in the horizon, the Eiffel Tower.

The fortress

I recommend to see the basement of the first Louvre which is fully visible at the "entresol".

You can see the simple shape of the fortress : square with a tower at each of the four corners, one door, a donjon in the center and a moat at the bottom of the walls.

An exibit (unsufficiently lighted) tells the story of the Louvre.

Statues halls

In the Richelieu Wing, you can walk in the middle of antic statues or make a drawing of one of them or sit on a bank if you are tired.
