Bastille

by GUYON - last update: Jan 12, 2003

The Column (Place de la Bastille)

Colonne de Juillet
Here was the fortress of La Bastille which protected Paris on its East side.

At the beginning of the Revolution, it was a prison and the 14 July 1789, the Parisians invaded the Bastille and delivered the 7 prisonners, martyr of the liberty (really lunatics or debtors).

On his diary, Louis 16th noted : "14 July : nothing". He had in mind to suppress la Bastille.

The fortress was demolished during the following months.

The first anniversary of the event was celebrated during the "Fête de la Fédération". The French National Day was created in memory of this Fest.

The current column was erected from 1835 to 1840 in memory of the Parisian demonstrators of the Revolution of 1830 which lasted 3 days (so called les Trois Glorieuses - The 3 Glorious). The killed demonstrators during the 27,28 & 29 July 1830 were burried here.

A museum had also two Egypsian mummies (imported as dried fish... I cannot invent that) which were unuseful. Two pharaons are now with the Revolutionnaires.

It is not possible to climb on the top, though there is a stair.
Opera Bastille

L'Opera Bastille

Previously, there was here a train station which linked Paris and the East Suburbs. Each day, during 7 years, I was in this station twice a day.

In 1970, it was replaced by the RER (line A).

Now, this "cake building" is the Opera, the relative of the "Palais Garnier" and inaugurated the 14 July 1989.

You can see here modern works. The classical ones are rather reserved to the other Opera.

A street orchestra

May be, they are revolutionary singers. But not in French.

Rue du Fbg St Antoine

Rue du Faubourg Saint Antoine

This street was the center of furniture manufacturing in Paris.

Few manufacturers remain. They are mainly specialized in restoration or tapestry (for harmchairs). But the stores are maintained.

This area is also a high site of the Paris night life with its restaurants and clubs. Especially, the rue de Lappe.

An address : Chapelle des Lombards - 19 rue de Lappe - A tropical atmosphere to dance.

Cours du Chêne Vert

The furniture makers worked in small courts behind the street.

They left now but the courts are remained to enjoy our eyes.

This one is rue de Charenton.

An other one which is on the rue du Faubourg Saint Honoré.

And this last one, covered of plants in the Springs.

Look at the painting which is on the 2nd floor of the small building in the middle of the photograph.
