Centre Georges Pompidou and Les Halles

by GUYON - last update: Jan 7, 2003

An strange building

Centre Georges Pompidou
Hugly, futuristic, or simply fantastic.
Eglise Saint Eustache

St Eustache

The entrance of the square. The Forum des Halles (a Mall) is on the right of the church.
When my grand-grand-father came from Lyon to Paris around 1842, St Eustache was his parish.

A most visited attraction

This photograph has been taken a Sunday morning off a tourist period.

If you do not like to queue, pass by the entries rue du Renard or rue Beaubourg. They are normally used (not everyday) for the free library but you can cheat and go to the paying exibits avoiding the external queue.
Parvis
Musee d'Art Moderne

A Modern Art Museum

Open every day (except on Tuesday) 11AM - 9PM (library : 10PM)

Price : 5.50€ (free 1st Sunday of each month and <18)

Library : free entrance

Address : place Georges Pompidou (métro : Chatelet-Les Halles, Rambuteau, Hotel de Ville)

Website : www.centre-pompidou.fr

Sightseeing

If you take a paying entrance you may go to the top of the building to have a large sightseeing on the district.
Parvis
Open spectacle

The acrobat

The Parvis is the stage for the acrobats. Rapidly a crowd rings them. They do a show (style "Antony Quinn in La Strada") and they conclude begging some money.

An amusing fountain

Located on the right of the Centre Georges Pompidou, the Fountain Stravinski (name of the place on which it is situated) was built by Tinguely and Niki de Saint Phalle.

Tinguely was a fool or a genius or both together. He made crazy things with rubish. The fountain is a sample of his work.

Odd machines works moved by water with a sound of rattle. Each is a linked to a music of the compositor : Springs's Anointing, The Fire Bird.
Fountain
Fountain

An ancient one

This fountain was initially put against a wall. It needed a fourth side to be set up in the middle of a place.

In Summer, this place is invaded by the crowd who frequents the numerous shops mearby.

Artes

In front of the Centre Georges Pompidou there is a bookstore-coffee shop : Artes.

It worths to stay there to look at the books or at the art works copies drinking a coffee or a coke.

Saint Eustache

Saint Eustache church

A witness of the Past in a modern area.
