a typical chimarrao recipe.. As i mentioned before, the CHIMARRAO is the typical hot drink we use to drink in RIO GRANDE DO SUL. It's prepared with a strong bitter native herb(ERVA MATE)and drink in a CUIA(a kind of wood bowl-hey,the only english translation i got for cuia is GOURD,but as i never heard about such word for it,than correct me if it means a completely diferent thing! I'll show now the 4 rules for preparing it.. |
rule nbr 1 fill in the gourd up to 3/4 of its volume with ERVA MATE.. |
rule nbr2 close the top of the gourd with your hand and rotate it to an horizontal position.. |
rule nbr3 rise it up slowly adding warm water enough to fix the ERVA MATE in an inclined position.Let it rest for about 3 minutes.. |
rule nbr4 close the top of the stram with your thumb and put it inside the gourd with the flat part in its bottom, suporting the straw against the border of the gourd(not over the ERVA MATE..).. |
IT'S READY NOW.. ..add hot water in the empty space near the straw up to the top of the gourd(do not cover completely the ERVA). Take it till the water has finished then fill it again and so on..do not move the straw anymore and use the same ERVA untill you note it has lost its taste. When in a group of people, the CHIMARRAO pass from hand to hand, all drink from the same straw..it's a typical custom..always take the gourd with the right hand.. GOOD LUCK! |
erva mate one can buy it everyplace, supermakets and so on,but the best places to buy it is in the typical small shops where it's much fresh.. |
