My First Trip To Costa Rica

by bonmse - last update: Sep 14, 2002

Driving into San Jose

Taxi Ride from the Airport

In March 2002 I took my first trip to Costa Rica. I took the red-eye United flight from LAX to SJO. I arrived in the morning and traffic was so heavy during the morning rush hour that in San Jose the runner in the picture was moving faster than my taxi!
Rear view of urban bus

Barrio Mexico

I was surprised when this bus in front of our Taxi had a sign for Barrio Mexico, one of the neighborhoods in San Jose.
Entrance to Hotel

Hotel Presidente

The first hotel I stayed in Costa Rica was Hotel Presidente in downtown San Jose. This is a view of the front entrance to the restaurant.

Indigenous People of Costa Rica

this picture was taken in Avenida Central in San Jose, notice the colorful costumes..
Soccer game - Alajuelense vs Santa Barbara

La Liga

I'm a soccer fan, so wherever I go I always attend a soccer game. Here's a scene from a game between La Liga Deportiva Alajuelense and Santa Barbara of the Costa Rican First Division.
Pedro El Escamoso Contest

Pedro El Escamoso, Tico Version

During halftime they held a contest for Pedro El Escamoso look-alikes. Pedro is a famous character from a Colombian telenovela that's famous all over Latin America and the USA. Guess who won?
La Liga's #1 Fan

This young lady is proud of being a Liga fan!

Trip to Arenal/La Fortuna

From San Jose I booked a trip to Arenal/La Fortuna on a shared tour group that was heading there....so first they took me to look at furniture in Sarchi.

Beautiful Church & Gardens

The next stop was in another town (whose name I don't recall) to look at the Church and the well-tended gardens of the plaza.

First View of Arenal

Here I am standing in the middle of a tilled field with the Arenal Volcano in the background.
Volcan Arenal Peak

View of Arenal - First Day

most of the time Arenal's crater is covered by fog.

Hotel Los Lagos

Here's a picture of my room at this fine, quiet relaxin place.

Hike around Arenal's base

...it's very dangerous to get close to Arenal due to possible eruptions...so the best thing to do is to hike on a mountain trail around the base of the volcano.

View of Arenal's Lava Flow

this picture shows some of the lava trails that have flowed out of Arenal...

Hotel Los Lagos - Pool Area

This is a view of the Hotel Los Lagos Pool area....http://www.monteverdeinfo.com/hotel_los_lagos.htm

The skies clear!

Finally, on the day I was leaving, the skies above Arenal cleared....and two craters were shown!

Funeral Procession

On the way back to San Jose from La Fortuna we passed the town of San Carlos where a funeral procession was taking place.

Visit to Cartago's Cathedral

On a Sunday morning I hopped on a bus in San Jose for the short trip to Cartago's Cathedral, home of La Virgen de Los Angeles. Here's a view of the church.

La Virgen de Los Angeles

Here's a picture of the patron sain of Costa Rica.

Holy Water Fountain

This is a photo of the Holy Water Fountain that pilgrims use for their ailments.

Coffe Plantation Tour

This photo shows various types of coffee in a Coffee Plantation above the hills of Alajuela.

Alajuela Coffee Plantation

This is a view of the garden in the coffee Plantation.

Volcan Poas

Our tour stopped at Poas volcano, due to the fog we couldn't see the crater, so you'll have to endure with my photograph. Notice that I had to wear a sweater due to the slight chill & fog.

Roadside Waterfall

As part of the tour we stopped by this waterfall right next to the highway.

Another Waterfall

we then stopped for a snack at a little store from where we caught this glimpse of another waterfall...

Crossing a bridge over the Sarapiqui

We stopped for lunch at the Selva Verde Lodge next to the Sarapiqui river (the weather was humid and a quick rain blew over while having lunch)...

Sarapiqui River Boat Ride

riding a boat on the Sarapiqui provides you with great sights of nature.....here's a green iguana blending in with the foliage.

Saprissa vs Morelia

here's a scene from the Saprissa vs Morelia game...the game ended in a 1-1 tie.
