Cartago Pilgrimage/Romeria a Cartago

by bonmse - last update: Sep 14, 2002

Cathedral of La Virgen de Los Angeles

On August 2 2002 I walked the pilgrimage from San Jose Centro to Cartago's Cathedral where the Virgen de Los Angeles is venerated. I started my journey at 7 am (having arrived in town on midnight of the 1st) and completed it just before 11am. Cartago is about 25 kms from San Jose, the road is mostly uphill, except for the last 5 km where it's downhill and then flattens out.

La Virgen de Los Angeles (La Negrita) is Costa Rica's national saint and every year on the eve of August 2nd ticos set out on foot, horseback, bicycles, skates, etc... from their homes to Cartago.

Heading East from San Jose

This is a view along Avenida Central on the eastern outskirts of San Jose. Notice the fair amount of people on the road. Most people do the pilgrimmage on the night before. (Note: the time on the pictures of this travelogue is ahead of real time by 7 hours)

Looking back towards the Tres Rios Road

This view shows the road back towards Tres Rios, Curridabat and San Jose. Notice the long uphill climb the pilgrims have to walk/run/cycle.

Walking downhill towards Cartago

Finally, we make our way downhill into the Cartago outskirts.

Cartago's Central Market

This is a view of the Central Market in Cartago. The Cathedral is in the eastern part of town so one must cross most of the city on a west-to-east road.

Cathedral of La Virgen de Los Angeles

I arrived to the Cathedral right in the middle of the morning mass. Due to the large crowd of people the mass was held outdoors by the bishop and priests of Cartago.

A glimpse of La Negrita

Having arrived late I couldn't make my way closer to the makeshift altar and La Negrita than what's shown on this picture.

Blessed Water Fountain

This is a view of the Blessed Water Fountain that believers drink to cure their ailments.

Restaurant behind the Cathedral

This is a view of the soda behind the Cathedral in Cartago.

Almuerzo

Right behind the Cathedral there is a little park with benches and a souvenir shop. There's also a soda where I bought my noon meal. It was a casado con chuletas (rice, beans, vegetables, bananas and pork). After a 25 km hike it was a great meal!

Farewell to La Negrita

This is a view as I was leaving the Cathedral toward the bus depot for my return to San Jose.

Trio de Romeros

The Virgin does work miracles. I ran into this father and son tandem on the road out of San Jose at 7am, the adult tico asked me if I wanted my picture taken, I told him that I would wait until I arrived in Cartago.

As I was walking towards the bus depot I ran into them. They were barely arriving in town as I was leaving. I had arrived 2 hours ahead of them. So, we finally took our picture together.

Cartago Bus Depot

This picture shows the Bus Depot where one can catch a Bus for San Jose. The fare was 205 colones (like 66 cents).
