Viaduct Basin

I was in Auckland during the Louis Vuitton Challenge and the America's Cup Yacht race. The atmosphere in Auckland was electrifying not only for the Kiwi's getting in behind their team but the other country supporters, especially the Italians who were the eventual winners of the Louis Vuitton Cup to challenge NZ for the America's cup. The America's Cup Village and Viaduct Basin was just humming with people wandering around or sitting in the many restaurants and bars just enjoying the buzz of it all. Thousands of spectator boats went out on the gulf each race day to have grand stand views of the race. The number of huge yachts and motor launches that came down to Auckland from overseas destinations, especially for the race, was staggering. One visiting Texan was quoted as saying "I'm a frustrated sailor, so seeing these boats in the Cup village is like going to the Vatican. Seeing this is the very top of the sailing world." When NZ won the cup, 5-0 against the Italians (Prada) 70,000 crazed fans funnelled into the viaduct to give the crew a heros welcome. Wait another couple of years... and it all begins again in Auckland for the challenge to take the cup off the Kiwi's.

The Screen

A large screen was erected in the village to view the racing out in the Hauraki Gulf.... The Italians were out in force with their flags cheering their team on.

Prada - the Challenger

Boats heading out to one of the races.

The Cup brought down some very expensive yachts and boats - most registered in the Cayman Islands.
